Non-Profits take notice-Nike Factory Store announces grant availability
Grants totaling $50,000 will be awarded to community organizations in North and Northeast Portland as part of the Nike Factory Store Grant Program. The deadline for applications is, Friday, April 18. A committee will review grant applications and notification will be made on or before May 5. Nike will honor grant recipients at a ceremony at the Nike Factory Store later in the month.

Nike opened its Portland Factory Store in 1984 and pledged to donate a percentage of the store’s sales to community-based non-profit organizations. Since that time, the Portland Factory Store has donated more than $1 million to North and Northeast Portland organizations. The Portland Factory Store Grant Program, which formally launched in 1997, last year renewed its commitment to donate $50,000 a year through 2007.

All organizations interested in applying for a 2003 Portland Nike Factory Store Grant must be non-profit, community-based organizations serving the North/Northeast Portland area, and must be able to show proof of tax-exempt status by providing a copy of its 501(c)(3) determination letter. Additionally, applicants must have programs that provide at least one of following areas of focus: youth sports and recreational/physical activities, education and mentoring opportunities, and economic development opportunities focusing on women and youth.

Application forms can be picked up at the Nike Portland Factory Store located at 2650 N.E. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. All grant proposals must be received or postmarked by April 18.

All Books for Children Book Drive
Now through Tuesday, April 22, customers can donate books at Starbucks retail locations throughout the Portland-metro area. Starbucks has partnered with Schoolhouse Supplies to help distribute the books to 288 public elementary schools in Clackamas, Clark, Multnomah and Washington counties. Your Mid-County Starbucks locations are 10112 N.E. Halsey St (503-251-2164) and 11906 S.E. Division St. (503- 762-1424).

“Given the current education funding crisis, many schools have had to cut library budgets. By participating in the Starbucks All Books for Children Book Drive, community members can make an immediate impact on the education of our children,” said Martha Nielsen, regional marketing manager for Starbucks Coffee Company in Oregon and Southwest Washington. “As a result of strong community involvement throughout the years, our past book drives have put more than 1.5 million books into the hands, minds and hearts of children in need.”

Schoolhouse Supplies (www.schoolhousesupplies.org) collects new and used products from the community and uses these supplies to stock a volunteer run free store for teachers. This year, Schoolhouse Supplies expanded the program to include all of Portland’s 97 public schools, providing necessary supplies to over 54,000 students. Most teachers spend more than $500 out of their own pocket to provide necessary supplies to their low-income students. Schoolhouse Supplies is a sponsored project of the Portland Schools Foundation.

Elder Friendly Certified Businesses
“The largest and most complete fabric store in the West”, Fabric Depot, 700 S.E. 122nd Ave. (503-252-9530) has received certification as an Elder Friendly Business by Elders in Action who created this one-of-a-kind program to evaluate business on how well they serve older adults.

Elder Friendly Business Certification is a licensed assessment program that provides this needed knowledge. Using specific guidelines, trained elder evaluators from a licensed aging agency “shop” a business anonymously for a nominal fee. Evaluators review the effectiveness of telephone and customer service, building layout and access. They then provide feedback and training information to management. When in compliance, the business is awarded certification in the form of a window decal that lets everyone know this business is Elder Friendly Certified.

To locate other Elder Friendly businesses, contact Elders in Action at 503-823-5269.

Work party set for Johnson’s Lake
A work party to improve and enhance Johnson’s Lake will be held starting at 8:30 a.m. April 26. Volunteers will be wrapping trees with metal to protect them from beavers, removing blackberry vines, and clearing a concrete pad for flower planting as part of a future contemplative garden, according to organizer Marcie Emerson-Peters. Later this summer the Sumner Neighborhood Association and the Boy Scouts will be planting additional trees and sweet smelling herbs and shrubs.

To get to the work party assembly area, take Northeast Alderwood Road east from 82nd Avenue, and look for a turnoff to Glass Plant Road on the right. For more information call the East Portland Neighborhood Office at 503-823-4550, or the Central Northeast Neighborhood office at 503-823-3156.

CERT comes to Maywood Park
The City of Maywood Park is leading the way in Mid-County by establishing a Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT). As reported in the Maywood Park March Bulletin, the council and citizen volunteers have undergone training in this program designed to create an emergency response plan for communities. The Maywood Park CERT is responsible for implementing and initiating the plan as well as ascertaining the cities assets and liabilities and assisting Maywood Park families with their own emergency plan. One of the Maywood Park CERT’s first moves has been to access the cities needs based upon national guidelines. As Maywood Park Mayor Mark Hardie explained in the bulletin, it is first important to identify available assets and liabilities before setting about making purchases or plan modifications.

Assets to Maywood Park in case of emergency would be citizens who are doctors, nurses or emergency trained personnel, or a ham radio operator and radio. Liabilities would include individuals who are house bound, require life support systems, home respirators or rely on outside caretakers and services.

The Maywood Park CERT will be distributing brochures to each household. The brochure will explain how each family might prepare a personal emergency plan that could include a supply of non-perishable foods and drinking water for at least three days. Each family will also be asked to notify the city as to their assets and/or liabilities as outlined by the program.

Maywood Park residents are encouraged to contact Julie at the Maywood Park City office, 503-255-9805, for more information.

Other Mid-County neighborhoods associations also are involved in the CERT program. Contact your neighborhood Association or the East Portland neighborhood office at 503-823-4550 for more information about CERT in your neighborhood.
