Meet "The Lady Barber"

To the Editor:

In your October issue there was a letter from Gary Moore indicating that he was looking for a barbershop between 102nd Ave. and 122nd Ave. on Halsey St.  I suggest that he stop in at 10742 N.E. Halsey St. and acquaint himself with Judy - "The Lady Barber".

Judy has been cutting my hair, as well as three of my grandson's hair, for several years.  We have never had a bad haircut because she is very conscientious about the job that she does and much prefers to cut hair for men rather than women.

If Mr. Moore will give Judy the opportunity, I think he'll be well satisfied with the way she cuts his hair.

Sincerely,

Earle C. DeKay, Portland, OR

The truth about homeowners and airport noise

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to the one written by Mr. Jim Stafford in the September issue of the Memo.  Mr. Stafford suggested that members of the community who are working with the Port of Portland to lessen airport noise are "stupid" and "whiners" who did not know the air traffic patterns when purchasing their homes.  He further suggested that they move if the noise was bothering them.

Most of the people on our street are in the same situation that we are.  We have lived in our home for 26 years.  We DID know the air traffic patterns when we moved here.  However, the airport has been continually expanding, changing runways, and the planes are now much larger and louder than when we moved here.  The last runway changes affected the landing patterns over our neighborhood from near the river to directly overhead.

We applaud the Port of Portland for the dialogue with area residents.  We hope that someday this working with the Port will result in less noise for us as it did for a neighborhood near the airport this summer when a special installation resulted in soundproofing of airplanes warming up for takeoff.  Many of us would love to take your suggestion and move.  However, in order to do so, we must sell our home.  But guess what... no one wants to buy a house with noisy aircraft overhead!
