Strengthen your small business
The Gateway and Lents Small Business Workshop is coming soon. This event gives you the opportunity to discuss your businesses one-on-one with some of Portland’s most experienced CEOs, vice presidents, and managers. Identify your strengths and weaknesses, as well as opportunities and threats affecting your business. You will have help developing a strategy to take advantage of opportunities and address challenges.

This workshop will also provide information about low interest loans and programs developed specially for small business owners. You will also have the chance to introduce yourself to fellow small business owners in the area.

This workshop will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Lents Masonic Lodge, 5811 S.E. 92nd Ave., one block north of Foster Road. Attendance is free, but registration is required. To register or for more information, please call Heidi Sause at 503-943-7782.

Annual spaghetti feed
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church members invite the community to the Neighborhood and Parish Spaghetti Dinner to be held in the parish hall on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. Enjoy a spaghetti dinner and meet your neighbors at this annual event, held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 11229 N.E. Prescott St. Tickets are available at the door, or you can reserve tickets or tables by calling the church at 503-252-5720. Ticket prices are as follows: Adult meals cost $6, children under 12 cost $3.00 and children under 3 are free. Wine will also be availed for $2 per glass.

Las Brisas offers design help
How many times have you wished you could meet with a professional designer, ask questions and get an educated opinion? Here’s your opportunity to get a professional opinion for free. The Las Brisas Neighborhood at 165th Ave. and Sandy Boulevard is hosting several free events. On Thursday, Oct. 17, Deborah Spofford, regular on AM Northwest, Creative Designer and Author will hold a workshop entitled “Creative Designs for Fall and the Holidays” from 7 to 8 p.m.

Designer Rebecca Juarez will be holding free consultations on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 7 to 8 p.m. Bring your swatches and pictures for problem areas.

Liz Maitral, Feng Shui Consultant will hold a workshop called “Creating the Life you Deserve” on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Learn more about airport noise
“Noise 101” is coming to the Portland International Airport on Saturday, Oct. 19. This workshop offers the opportunity to learn about airport operations and noise management programs. This program, sponsored by the Port of Portland, is open to the general public from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the PDX Conference Center at 7000 N.E. Airport Way. Those attending can talk with staff from the Port’s Noise Management Office about specific areas of concern and learn more about opportunities for citizen involvement in reducing the effects of aircraft noise in the community.

Monthly Group Meetings

GABA welcomes new members
This month the Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) will be presenting a special welcome package to new members at the October general meeting. Local business owners and managers are invited to come see what all the fuss is about. Meet with other business owners and promote your business. In addition, each GABA meeting features a special guest speaker.

At the October meeting, the guest speaker will be Stacy Shipley from Citizens Against Crime. This organization has operated in Portland for over 13 years. It is an international company which educates adults about crime prevention and personal safety.

Representatives from Portland Children’s Initiative Campaign, Portland Parks and Recreation campaign and the Multnomah County Library campaign will give brief updates on their ballot measures which will be on the November ballot.

Each meeting also includes a Spotlight Speaker, chosen from among the members. The Spotlight Speaker has the opportunity to deliver a five minute presentation to promote their business. There will be a signup sheet for new members to become Spotlight Speakers at the October general meeting, held on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 11:45 a.m. in JJ North’s Grand Buffet banquet room, 10520 N.E. Halsey St.

Benefit the community and yourself
If you would like to do something for the community and also enjoy a weekly bingo game, the Columbia View Kiwanis are the club for you. Each weekly meeting includes discussion on how to help local charities, a lively game of bingo, and a special program with guest speakers on topics of interest.

Help keep Americans involved
The most important ingredient to a successful democracy is the participation of the people. It’s not enough to simply vote every year or two. Help keep your fellow Americans - and yourself - involved in our own governance. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan group dedicated to increasing citizen participation in the government. They also seek to influence public policy through advocacy and education.

Expand your business contacts
The Parkrose Business Association (PBA) invites all area business owners and managers to join them in this month’s PBA meeting. You not only get a chance to make other business contacts, but each meeting also includes a guest speaker discussing a topic of interest. In addition to these features, each PBA meeting includes a “Member Moment” allowing you to learn more about area businesses and available services. It also gives you the opportunity to educate other business owners about your business when you have a “Member Moment”.

This month’s speaker will be Renewable Northwest Project - come find out how this organization affects you and what they are all about. The “Member Moment” for October will focus on The Phoenix Theater/ Theater to Go. They will present a short entertaining performance.
