Practice for the SATs
Parkrose High School will be holding the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Often considered a “practice test” for the senior year SAT exam, the PSAT/NMSQT includes five sections: two 25-minute verbal sections, two 25-minute math sections and one 30-minute writing skills section. The whole test requires two hours and ten minutes.

Registration for the PSAT/NMSQT begins on Tuesday, Oct. 1 for Parkrose High School juniors and home-schooled juniors residing in the district. Sophomores and freshmen may register starting Monday, Oct. 7. Registration will close when all 110 test seats have been reserved.

Students may bring cash or a check made out to Parkrose High School to the high school’s business office. The cost is $15. Fee waivers are available for foster children and students enrolled in the free or reduced cost lunch program.

Fall Festival
The St. Rita Catholic Church is once again holding their Annual Fall Festival and Bazaar. This year brings many new vendor tables as well as a boutique, baked goods, fresh produce and a wide variety of unusual items for sale. Lunch will be served all day, so visit this fun event on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Festival will be held at the church, 10029 N.E. Prescott St. For more information, please call 503-254-0305.

Avoid the worst road hazard - other drivers
The American Association of Retired People regularly offers a “55 Alive” defensive driving course. This course helps teach older citizens strategies of safe driving. One feature that makes this class especially valuable to seniors is that some of the strategies that are presented are designed to help overcome the problems that can come with age, such as dimmed vision or slow reflexes.

Not only will you avoid costly tickets, fines, and accidents, but the “55 Alive” driving course can also help save you money on your car insurance - check with your insurance provider. The class is a refresher course in driving skills and general information, available to anyone aged 55 or over. All this is offered for a fee of just $10. The next two-session class will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 29 and Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Adventist Health Center, 10123 S.E. Market St, in Education Center #B, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information or to pre-register, please call Instructor Artie Johnson at 503-282-8044.

A new focus for Halloween
This year, Parkrose residents can give more than goodies on Trick-or-Treat night: they can give the gift of sight. Trick-or-Treat night is Sight Night, and this year, those at your door won’t just be there for candy. Students and other members of the Parkrose community will collect used eyeglasses. The collected glasses will be recycled and hand-delivered by Parkrose Lions Club volunteers and LensCrafters to people in developing countries who desperately need glasses, but cannot afford them.

Sight Night is part of a nationwide collection drive by Give the Gift of Sight, sponsored by LensCrafters Foundation in conjunction with Lions Clubs International. Each year, Give the Gift of Sight sponsors optical missions to developing countries such as Mexico, Bolivia, Laos and Thailand.

Be on the lookout for used specs and sunglasses in every nook and cranny of your home or place of work. Sight Night volunteers are collecting any types of prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses. Children’s glasses are especially in need, as they are in high demand but in short supply. Whether they are big or small, the latest in fashion or went out with polyester, your glasses could change how someone in a developing country sees the world!

Have eyeglasses ready at your door, or scare up glasses in your community as a Sight Night volunteer.

If the “ghouls and boys” don’t make it to your door on Sight Night, have no fear - used eyeglasses can be dropped off to Parkrose Lions Club year round at any Parkrose School or Bob Brown Tires.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service organization with 1.4 million members in more that 44,600 clubs in 189 countries. Lions clubs have been collecting and recycling eyeglasses for more than 70 years.

For more information, please call Parkrose Lion Lorraine Lanxon at 360-896-3024.
