(continued) Boating and fishing education and awareness day This event at Metros Chinook Landing Marine Park on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m.- 4p.m. will increase your knowledge of boat and water safety while providing new information about the regions water related recreational opportunities and the appropriate use of our regional waterways. The Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Power Squadron will have all hands on deck to provide free watercraft safety inspections in concert with Multnomah County Sheriffs River Patrol. Additional programs offered will include how to build your own boater safety kid, knot-tying demonstrations, boater videos and visits by the Coast Guard helicopter. Take a guided walk and learn about efforts to restore the vitality of the Columbia River. Children can participate in the Coast Guard Sea Partners and find out how to help protect the health of regional waterways. Visit the Coast Guards river clean van and see the equipment used for responding to toxic spills. Listen as staff naturalists and others talk about all the different types of angling opportunities from sturgeon bank casting to steelhead fishing. What is a Northern pike minnow and why is there a bounty on it? Learn about the Columbia Rivers native salmon runs and what is being done to restore them. Short free workshops and clinics will be scheduled throughout the day; participants will be asked to register on site the day of the event. Local professional outfitters will be available for short talks on navigation and safety for canoes and kayaks. Learn how to have fun while being safe and courteous in small watercraft. The Coast guard Auxiliary will provide additional on-board safety information. Dont be caught unprepared. Local regulatory agencies will be available to provide information on boat and fishing licensing as well as upcoming boater education requirements. Take this opportunity to explore Chinook Landing Marine Park, a 67-acre marine park with six launching lanes on the Columbia River. It is the largest public boating facility in Oregon. The park offers picnic and viewing areas, wetland and wildlife habitat, disabled-accessible docks, restrooms and a seasonal river patrol station. Chinook Landing Marine Park is adjacent to Blue Lake Regional Park on Marine Drive. Bring the whole family and be on your way to a safer and more enjoyable summer boating season for watercraft of all types. There is a $4 per vehicle entry fee; free with your annual Metro parks pass. Vote Ballot Measure 26-48 is a proposed ordinance that would provide three years of bridge funding for Multnomah County schools, senior and low-income health services and public safety needs such as decreasing the early release of prisoners. If enacted, the ordinance would establish a three-year, personal income tax of 1.25% on Oregon taxable income. Voters will make a decision on the Measure on May 20, 2003. All Oregon elections are vote-by-mail, so ballots will appear in mailboxes beginning the first week in May. Whatever your position on this issue, be sure to cast your vote. Ice cream social Calling all Shaver Elementary School alum, and the community at large. The Shaver Parent Faculty Association (SPFA) invites you to attend an ice cream social on Tuesday, May 20 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the school at 3701 N.E. 131st Place. This fundraiser promises to provide loads of fun for everyone. The third through fifth grade classes will be singing while guests participate in activities ranging from Bingo to a silent auction. Burgerville is donating the ice cream for this event. Auction items collected thus far include special gift baskets assembled by the students and local businesses; tickets to the Chinese Gardens and Northwest Childrens Theatre; Blazers memorabilia; car washes and gift certificates. Water quality meeting The East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District develops comprehensive plans and specifications for the conservation of soil resources and for the continued control and prevention of soil erosion. Hours for the sale are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. At any one of the participating households, attendees can obtain a brochure listing the addresses where sales are being held, outlining the special items each home will be selling, and showing a map of the entire neighborhood. Each home taking part in the sale will be marked with a blue-staked sign and balloons so that it is easily identifiable. At this years event, Lily Field Christian Montessori School will be sponsoring a fundraising concession stand where coffee, donuts, caramel corn, various lunch items and beverages will be offered for sale. Last year, 70 individual households participated in the garage sale. The City of Maywood Park is located between Northeast 92nd and 102nd Avenues from Fremont to Prescott Streets. Parkrose Community Fair Saturday, May 31 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. the Parkrose High School Bronco Boosters bring the community together for a day of lively family oriented activities. Sample the food, climb a rock wall and enjoy local entertainment while raising scholarship funds for Parkrose students. This event takes place at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E.
