Commitment to peace

This is done through undergraduate and graduate scholarships, youth exchange programs, Group Study Exchange, humanitarian grants, and Matching Grants, and its newest program, Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution.

Rotary International serves 1.2 million Rotarians with different views on different subjects. It is the policy of Rotary International that Rotarians should be involved in whatever they feel strongly about, but Rotary International does not support or condone the action of any political entity.

SCHOOL CORNER
The Great White Way comes to Mid-County
Area high schools are buzzing with activity as theater and drama classes prepare for spring productions. Talented students have been learning their lines, painting sets, get costumes ready, rigging lights and making sure sound systems are ready to go. Choose from the offerings of the following three schools, or plan your calendar carefully and see each of the performances.

Parkrose High School Announces Spring Musical
Parkrose High School will be performing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical extravaganza “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on May 8, 9, and 10. All performances begin at 7 p.m.

Based on the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis, the play follows Joseph’s falling into slavery by his dastardly brothers, his trials in the house of Potiphar, his rise to power as Pharaoh’s second in command, and his compassion as he forgives his brothers.

New drama teacher Justin Lindemann makes his Parkrose Performing Arts Center directorial debut with this production. He guarantees that “Joseph” will dazzle audience members of all ages and appeal to all types. From Calypso singing brothers, to a Sixties dance party, to an Elvis impersonating Pharaoh, “Joseph” promises to entertain all.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and students (with a valid ID). For Parkrose High School students, there is a free preview Wednesday, May 7th at 7 p.m. All performances are at the Parkrose High School, 12003 NE Shaver St. Reserve your tickets by calling the box office at 503-408-2718.

The David Douglas High School Theatre Department is proud to present Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Starring junior Kyle Murray as Macbeth and senior Sarah Gabriel as Lady Macbeth, this dark tragedy tells the story of Macbeth’s deceitful rise to power and his tumultuous fall. Armed with a prophesy from the three ‘weird sisters’ and sternly guided by the domineering hand of Lady Macbeth, Macbeth finds justification in the murder of Duncan, the King of Scotland (played by sophomore Chris McAlevy), to gain the crown for himself. Macbeth’s and Lady Macbeth’s ambition and greed drive them to the darkest corners of their humanity. In the end, it is too much for them to bear and the final stage of the prophesy by the weird sisters comes true as Macduff (junior Robbie Hustrulid) presents Macbeth’s head to Malcolm (sophomore Casey Wilson), the son of Duncan and the rightful heir to the throne. Performance dates are Thursday through Saturday, May 1, 2, 3, and 8, 9, 10 at the Howard F. Horner Performing Arts Center. Tickets are on sale at the Horner Center box office at 1400 S.E. 130th Ave. - $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors. For more information call 503-261-8270.

Portland Christian High School is involved in a special innovative, improvisational interaction with the production companies of Jesuit and Milwaukie high schools. On Thursday and Friday, May 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 10 at 3:00 in the afternoon, students will present The Rainmaker. The productions will be presented at the high school at 12425 N.E. San Rafael St. All tickets are $6 and will be sold at the door. For more information, call 503-256-6257 ext. 260.
