Composting workshops, demonstration sites and bins
Whether you are new to composting or are a veteran, Metro Recycling offers a variety of resources to help.

Because of its many attributes, compost is extremely versatile and beneficial in many applications. Compost has the unique ability to improve the properties of soils and growing media physically (structurally), chemically (nutritionally), and biologically. Although many equate the benefit of compost use to lush green growth, caused by the plant-available nitrogen, the real benefits of using compost are long-term and related to its content of living-organic matter.

A workshop is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m. at Leach Botanical Garden, 6704 S.E. 122nd Ave. This 90-minute workshop will cover basics of yard debris composting, bin design, worm bins and trouble-shooting. You will learn how to turn your yard trimmings and vegetable scraps into magic for your garden. To register call 503-234-3000.

If the workshop does not fit your needs, Leach Botanical Garden offers a home composting demonstration site. The site features active residential-scale compost bins, a worm bin, interpretive signs and free brochures. The garden is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Sunday, 1- 4 p.m. for self guided tours. To find the demonstration site, park in the main parking lot next to Johnson Creek, then walk 1/4 mile, following signs, across the creek and up the hill.

As an added incentive to get you started on the road to composting, Metro is again offering compost bins for sale. In Mid-County, your opportunity will be Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Gateway park and ride behind the Gateway Fred Meyer. The bins sell for $25 each. More information is available from Metro Recycling at 503-234-3000, or visit their website at www.metro-region.org.

Just for moms
As May celebrates mothers, what better time to talk about a club started by and for moms? Frustrated by the lack of a network to arrange play dates for her two children and to meet other stay at home moms, a California woman started her own group to fill the void in 1983. That first effort has grown to a nationwide organization boasting 1500 chapters.

Mid-County moms can join MOMS Club of Portland-Outer Southeast, which serves all of North and most of NE and SE Portland. The physical boundaries are the Columbia River, the Willamette River, 181st Avenue and Southeast Foster Road.

This is a support group designed for the at-home mother of today. While not exclusive to at-home moms, meetings are held during the day. Group principles include that women must be free to choose their personal path to fulfillment; that, for women who choose it, raising children is an important and fulfilling full-time job. This group also recognizes that a family’s decision for a mother to stay at home to raise the children often involves considerable financial sacrifice.

MOMS Club of Portland - Outer Southeast meets the 1st Thursday of every month (with the exception of July and August) at Resurrection Lutheran Church located at 1700 N.E. 132nd Ave., off of Halsey. Meetings are from 10-11:30 a.m. Annual dues are $15. If you missed the May 1 meeting, they will welcome you on Monday, June 2.

Please call Serena at 503-788-0079 or inquire at www.momsclub.org for more information.
