SCHOOL CORNER
Babysitting, safe driving classes offered
Parkrose SUN Community School, located at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. offers classes and activities for the young and young at heart.

For children who spend unsupervised time at home, the American Red Cross “When I’m In Charge” course teaches kids age 8 to 11 a variety of safety skills. Class is held March 15 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in Room A 3/4. Parents are encouraged to attend the last half hour. There is an $18 fee for this course.

For youth age 11 to 15, the American Red Cross “Babysitting Skills” course increases your potential to earn spending money upon receiving your certificate. Handle the challenges and responsibilities of babysitting, including accident prevention, emergency situations, positive supervision and first aid, and learn about babysitter rights. Bring a sack lunch. This class will be on Wednesday, March 23 from 9 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. in Room L13. The fee is $34.

For seniors the highly regarded AARP Driver Safety classes run monthly. The next class is Wednesday and Thursday March 22 and 23 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Learn practical tips, valuable information and changes in the law, all for only $10.

Youth after-school classes are also available. Ask about Parkrose student rates.

Enjoy lunch, meet new people
Are you a senior looking for a fun place to socialize? If so, join the folks at Cherry Blossom Loaves & Fishes for lunch Monday through Friday between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Each meal includes salad, your choice of two entrées and dessert, all for the suggested donation of only $2.75. The menu features scratch Asian cuisine Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and an entrée fresh salad bar on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Vision loss, positive thinking seminars offered
CherryWood Village Retirement Community, 1417 S.E. 107th Ave., invites residents, guests and members of the public to a pair of important seminars.

On Monday, March 6 at 1 p.m. the center offers a free, lively and interactive presentation for people with low vision.

Mary Lee Turner, Rehab Teacher from the Oregon Commission for the Blind, presents “Life after Vision Loss.” She’ll have tips that she uses on how to continue enjoying life with vision impairment. If you or someone you know suffers from vision loss, you are encouraged to come and hear what Turner has to say.

An OASIS Community Education class titled “Power Thinking” and featuring Erik Schott will be presented on Mondays, March 6 and 13 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Studies show that our thoughts have amazing powers over our lives. Learn what factors affect your mental wellness and what you can do to improve your positive sense of well-being. This seminar is free to CherryWood Village residents and depositors. Eye care focus of talk
A registered nurse will present a free question and answer session on “Glaucoma and Cataract Awareness” at Firwood Garden Residential Care Center, 819 N.E. 122nd Ave. The public is invited to attend. The session begins at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 16.

CHURCHES
Share bread, worship at local church
This will be a busy month at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St.

Join the congregation for a simple shared meal and worship as the church opens its Lenten journey of relationship building on Ash Wednesday, March 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Receive the mark of ashes as a reminder of our mortality in the embrace of God’s eternal love.

On Sunday, March 5, the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship will include “Remember the Hope Fellowship,” a multi-cultural faith community with a lively spirit. There will great music from traditional to spirited gospel. Worship will be followed by a shared potluck meal at noon. Bring a friend.

You are invited to all-ages Game Night, Friday, March 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Bring a snack or beverage to share, and invite your friends and family. There will be a variety of board and card games available for various age groups, plus nursery toys for the little ones.

The focus Sunday, March 12, will be on the Biblical theme of healing and how it relates to contemporary issues of access to adequate health care. Worship will take place in the sanctuary from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. then move into a conversational forum mode from 11:15 until noon.

Lenten liturgies scheduled
The Grotto, located at Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, will celebrate Lent in the Chapel of Mary.

Ash Wednesday Masses will be at noon and 7:30 p.m. on March 1. The Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be on Fridays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. from March 3 through April 7.

Via Matris or The Way of Our Sorrowful Mother follows the pattern of the Stations of the Cross, offering a time of prayer and reflection upon the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Participate in this traditional Servite devotion on Fridays, March 3 through April 14 at 3 p.m.

Palm Sunday Mass is April 9 at 10 a.m. Weather permitting, the blessing and distribution of palms will be held outdoors.

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is on Holy Thursday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Good Friday, the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion, is April 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Holy Saturday, or the Easter Vigil Mass, is April 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated on April 16 at 10 a.m. and noon.
