The David Douglas Scottish Tams Dance Team performs to the song As Time Goes By, from the movie Casablanca, as shown by the accompanying photo, at the Mt. Hood & Friends Dance Competition held last month at Parkrose High School Community Center. The Tams, coached and choreographed by former Parkrose Elite Coach Kelly Jones, earned second place in the show division.
Began in 1999 as a fundraising event for the Parkrose Elite Dance Team, the annual Mt. Hood & Friends competition gives dance teams from across the state a venue to compete at and the opportunity to earn a berth to the Oregon School Activities Association, or OSAA state tournament. The Parkrose Elite Dance Team brought the 4A state championships to Parkrose, in 1996 and 2001.
Twenty dance teams from around the state were on hand at the eighth annual competition to strut their stuff. Trophies were awarded in three categories: small drill, large drill and show. Drill teams cannot use props, but show performances can include sets, props and costume changes. Teams are judged in three areas: execution judges critique technique, alignment, and spacing and precision; content judges look for choreography, floor patterns and maneuvering; and the overall effect of the routine is scored for projection, repertoire and musicality.
Because the Parkrose Elite Dance Team is the host team and producer of Mt. Hood & Friends, it does not compete. The teams next performance and competition is Saturday, March 4 at David Douglas High School. The Scottish Tams host and present this competition.
The 2006 OSAA Dance/Drill State Championships are March 15 through 18 at the Memorial Coliseum and the University of Portland Chiles Center. David Douglas and Parkrose are two of the 10 dance/drill teams competing in the show division at this years state tournament. Learn more about this emerging, popular sport at www.osaa.org/dance/.
