Last month, the Parkrose School District hosted a gathering of school, neighborhood, political and business leaders at the high school. In attendance were neighborhood association board members and citizens from the Argay, Hazelwood, Parkrose Heights, Russell, Sumner and Woodland Park neighborhoods. Among the nearly 75 people present were the entire Parkrose School Board, school principals and staff, a representative from Portland Police Bureaus East Precinct, Oregon State Representatives Jeff Merkley and Jackie Dingfelder, city Office of Neighborhood Involvement officials and a number of representatives from the faith community.
Superintendent Michael Taylor shared recent school successes and thanked the community for its continued support and involvement with our local schools. He outlined some of the current achievements, emphasized that schools are at the core of our communities, and invited everyone to stay involved. He reminded people that the elementary schools are open until 8 p.m. and available for community functions. Issues of common interest discussed included graffiti, traffic concerns around the schools, neighborhood crime, area tree planting and the desire to maintain and expand the current prostitution-free zones in the area.
Parkrose School Board Chairman Katie Larsell said she was pleased to see so many community members in attendance and interested in the schools. She hopes this common meeting of neighborhood leaders and Parkrose schools will become an annual event. Larsell also says she hopes that the issues and concerns raised during the 90-minute meeting will be addressed in the same cooperative sprit displayed at the assemblage.
