Memo Pad...

To fully serve the community, the Mid-county MEMO offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers’ lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors.

MEMO Pad submissions for the April issue are due by Tuesday, March 15. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail editorial submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672.

Volunteers needed
Portland Adventist Community Services, 11020 N.E. Halsey St., a nonprofit health clinic, food bank, thrift store and gift shop, needs your help. Volunteer shifts are normally four hours once a week.

Immediate needs include a truck driver and a helper to ride along; people to help with sorting, pricing and hanging clothes; and people to work in the thrift store on Wednesday mornings and Thursday afternoons

Please call Carol Paulson at 503-252-8500 for more information.

Natural gardens sought
Do you control garden pests using organic or natural methods? Use water conservation techniques? Maintain your own garden? If you answered yes to these questions and your garden is within Metro’s boundary, you can help showcase the benefits of using natural techniques to a grow healthy, attractive garden.

Metro will select residential gardens in the Portland metropolitan area for its seventh annual public Gardens of Natural Delights tour on Sunday, July 10.

For more information and an application to be considered as a host gardener for the seventh annual Gardens of Natural Delights tour, call Metro Recycling Information at 503-234-3000. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, March 11.

The tour is a cooperative partnership of the Audubon Society of Portland and Metro.

Graffiti removal kits at Fire Station 41
The Office of Neighborhood Involvement’s Graffiti Abatement Program, in partnership with the Portland Fire Bureau, has announced the return of Graffiti Removal Kits to nine fire stations in Portland neighborhoods. These kits, containing environmentally friendly solvent and other graffiti removal supplies, are available to be checked out by interested community volunteers.

The program, initiated in 1998 by the Portland Fire Bureau and Portland Police, had gone dormant in recent years. The new kits will be simpler to use, as volunteers will no longer be asked to paint over graffiti. Instead, volunteers will be asked to concentrate their efforts on using solvent to wipe out graffiti on surfaces like metal light poles, backs of street signs and newspaper boxes. In addition, volunteers can use the provided scrapers to get rid of stickers in public areas, which are widespread, unsightly and difficult to remove.

Volunteers will be asked to fill out a volunteer application and agreement the first time they check out the supplies. “We really want to know who is helping us out in the community” said graffiti abatement coordinator Marcia Dennis. “When a person signs up as a graffiti removal volunteer, we will have a better idea not only who is helping, but which areas are receiving support from the community.”

Fire Station 41 in the Mill Park neighborhood, located at 1500 S.E. 122nd Ave., will have kits available to Mid-County residents for checkout every day, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., except when fire personnel are called out on emergencies, of course.

Please call Portland Fire Bureau Logistics Capt. Marco Benetti at 503-823-4559. For general or specific graffiti abatement information, call 503-823-5860 or online at www.portlandonline.com/oni and select “report a graffiti problem”.

OSU extension group
The Russellville Oregon State University extension group is seeking new participants of all ages. This educational and activity-oriented group focuses on family and community-related topics. The group meets the first Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call Abby at 503-988-6073.

Volunteer in a place of solitude
We are moving into one of the busiest times of the year for tourism and family outings, which translates to lots of opportunities to serve as a volunteer at The Grotto. There is currently a need for volunteers to serve at the reception desk, welcome center and visitors complex, and for individuals willing to help maintain the grounds. This is a great opportunity to put your talents to good use and help to make a difference in the lives of all who experience the serenity of the grounds at The Grotto.

For further information on volunteer opportunities please contact Gayle Diehl at 503-261-2408.
