Memo Pad...continued Grant money available Portland Parks & Recreation is accepting applications for Youth Trust Fund grants from agencies that benefit Portland area youth. Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000. Organizations may apply for a grant if they serve youth ages 4 to 18 within Portland. Interested applicants should visit www.PortlandParks.org for an application and instruction. Applications must include an overview of your organization, a proposal and project budget. Application deadline is Thursday, April 28. Seeking women artists The McKenzie River Gathering Foundation has applications for the 2005 Lilla Jewel Award for Women Artists in the categories of Literary Arts and Music. The deadline for application is Wednesday, May 11. There is no application fee; applicants must reside in Oregon and identify as women. The award will be up to $2,500 in each of the two categories and will be made in June. The Lilla Jewel award is given in honor of the vital role that arts play in enlivening movements for social justice. The McKenzie River Gathering Foundation recognizes that women artists have traditionally been under funded. MRG particularly encourages artists to apply who have been further marginalized due to race, sexual orientation or gender identity. While the Lilla Jewel Award is not based on financial need, the intent is to support a woman artist who has less access to traditional funding. The Lilla Jewel Award for Women Artists is MRGs only award available to individuals. The categories rotate each year. The McKenzie River Gathering Foundation nurtures the efforts of Oregonians working for a better world. MRG funds grassroots groups that bring people together to address issues in the areas of human and civil rights, racial justice, environmental protection, economic justice, peace, and international solidarity. For more information or to receive an application call 503-289-1517 or visit the Web site at www.mrgfoundation.org. Research study on headaches Determining an effective treatment for chronic headaches and neck pain is the purpose of a study being conducted at Western States Chiropractic College, 2900 N.E. 132nd Ave. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, is a randomized clinical trial that will examine the number and type of treatments needed to reduce headache pain and disability without the use of drugs. Eighty adults with headaches and neck pain will receive free treatment from a licensed chiropractor, with costs covered by the grant. Recruitment is now underway for participants who are at least 18 years old and able to read and write English. A smaller trial, completed last year at WSCC, found a relationship of pain reduction, disability, and number of headaches with the frequency and type of treatment.
