Spring herb propagation
Learn how to propagate herbs from divisions, seeds and cuttings in spring for summer bounty. The public is invited to this free event hosted by East Multnomah County Herb Society on Thursday, March 17 at 7 p.m. at Bethel Bible Fellowship Church, 5309 S.E. 115th Ave.

Focus on local businesses
The Parkrose Business Association monthly general membership meeting will be Thursday, March 17 at 11:30 a.m. at Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

The guest speaker will be Bridget Bayer of thinklocalportland.org who will discuss the “Think Local First” campaign that aims to keep locally owned businesses strong and our neighborhoods unique and vibrant.

The PBA plans to award three scholarships to Parkrose High School graduates and encourages all seniors who plan to go on to college to apply. Applications are available on line at www.parkrose.k12.or.us

Members are also busy planning the 4th Annual Rose Festival Cruise-in and will welcome anyone who would like to get involved.

FUNDRAISERS
Can and bottle drive
Rain or shine, the dedicated members of the Parkrose High School Bronco Boosters gather at Parkrose Middle School, 11800 N.E. Shaver St., on the first Saturday of each month to collect your refundable cans and bottles. The money they raise goes to support students and activities at the high school.

Drop by on Saturday, March 5 or April 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Boosters will be happy to see you.

Viking breakfast
The Sons of Norway invite everyone of Scandinavian decent or with interest in Scandinavia to their annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is held at Norse Hall, 111 N.E. 11th Ave. and features all you can eat pancakes served with sausages, blueberry sauce, orange juice, coffee and tea. The cost for adults is $5, children five to12 $3.50, and children under five free.

Chili cook off
CherryWood Village Retirement Community, 1417 S.E. 107th Ave., will host a chili cook off to raise money for Northwest Medical Teams Tsunami Relief on Wednesday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Portland Fire Fighters from Fire Station No. 41 will judge entries in three categories: Fire House Hot, Traditional and Vegetarian. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in each category. Judging begins at 11 in the Community Room. After awards are announced, the public is invited to try as many of the entries as they like for $2 per bowl. Call 503-408-0404 to register or simply drop by for the fun and a tasty bowl of chili.

Harvest share produce day
Low-income individuals and families may receive free fruits, vegetables and bread donated from the Oregon Food Bank. Harvest Share is held the first Tuesday of each month, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. For information call 503-988-6073.

Multi-lingual tax form preparation assistance
Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization will offer tax form preparation assistance for low-income community members in Russian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao, Arabic, French, Hmong and English languages. Certified volunteers will help prepare the tax forms for federal, state and county returns and will submit them electronically when applicable. All participants must be low-income with simple returns.

Aid will be offered at the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization’s office, 10301 N.E. Glisan St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, March 5 and 12, and April 2. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling 503-234-1541.

Rains, drains and city streams
Learn about the Columbia Slough watershed and how rainfall and our storm drains impact local streams. The Columbia Slough Watershed Council will host Columbia Slough 101 on Saturday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Multnomah County Drainage District office, 1880 N.E. Elrod Drive. This overview covers watershed history, hydrology, jobs, fish and wildlife, and stewardship. Hands-on activities will include stream bug sampling, visiting onsite stormwater treatment facilities, climbing the levee, visiting a slough pump station, and learning about ecosystem restoration projects. Town Hall meeting
State Sen. Frank Shields and State Reps. Jeff Merkley and Mike Schaufler will hold a joint Town Hall meeting in the district in mid March to talk to constituents about the current legislative session.

The Town Hall meeting is set for Saturday, March 12 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the library at Earl Boyles Elementary School, 10822 S.E. Bush St.

Now that the 73rd Session is underway, many issues are rising to the top such as education, jobs and accountability. Listen and ask questions of your representatives. They are eager to hear your concerns and share with you how they will best address your issues.

Shields represents parts of East Portland and Happy Valley. Merkley represents parts of East Portland, and Schaufler parts of Portland and Happy Valley. All residents of the area are invited to attend.

Internet safety
The Community Skills Center, at the Mt. Hood Community College Maywood Park Campus, 10010 N.E. Prescott St. will be offering a free, one-hour seminar on Internet Safety for Families. Learn how to keep your identity from being stolen and your children safe on the Internet. Children are welcome. The seminar is scheduled for Saturday, March 12 from 1 to 2 p.m. Call 503-491-6122 for additional information and to reserve a spot today.

Hazardous waste collection
If you have old paint cans, pesticides, paint thinner or antifreeze taking up space in your garage, Mt. Hood Community College and Metro Regional Services will provide an opportunity to safely dispose of all your small-scale hazardous waste.

On Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26, Metro staff will set up the “Roundup” in MHCC’s parking lot Z, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The “Roundup” will also offer residents a chance to learn about hazardous waste from Metro education staff and volunteers. There will be exhibits, short demonstrations and literature. The education staff will answer questions from customers on topics such as, alternatives to pesticides, greener cleaners and natural gardening techniques.

Household hazardous waste items typically collected include paint, antifreeze, oil, gasoline and other flammable liquids, batteries, pesticides, acids, bases and pool compounds.

Mt. Hood Community College is located at 26000 S.E. Stark St. in Gresham.
