Students will learn how to create buildings that are energy and resource efficient, that provide healthy working and living environments and are environmentally responsible and cost effective.

The course titled the Sustainable Building Advisor welcomes a diverse range of students from architecture and planning firms, engineering companies, developers and contractors, government agencies, research institutions, resource conservation organizations, utilities and environmental consulting organizations. Individuals successfully completing the course are eligible to take an exam and earn the Certified Sustainable Building Advisor designation. This nine-month course is scheduled to begin in October. July activities at The Grotto
From Fear to Faith: 12-Step Retreat: Friday July 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, July 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A life of alcoholic drinking is characterized by fear: fear of not enough, fear of being caught, fear of being held in contempt. Recovery moves away from fear to a faith that God gives sobriety one day at a time, and a recovery that we could not even imagine beforehand.

Monsignor Terry Richey has been leading recovery retreats since 1975. His duties in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles include conducting interventions leading to treatment for priests and religious who suffer from alcohol or drug problems.

A registration fee of $35 is requested for this event. Scholarships are available. This fee includes Friday evening dessert and Saturday lunch. Register by phone at 503-254-7371 or by e-mail at vlewandoski@thegrotto.org.

Summer book group: Joan Haack will lead this summer’s book group at The Grotto on Thursdays from July 17 through Aug. 14. The book selection is “Soul Within a Peach” by Florence Sau Ki.

There is no charge for attendance, although a free-will offering will be appreciated. The book group will be held 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. in The Grotto’s library room located in the administrative offices. To register call 503-261-2430 or e-mail spirituality@thegrotto.org

Blessing of the Animals: Animal lovers are encouraged to bring their pets, large and small, to the 25th Annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, July 20 at 2 p.m. Father Jack Topper, executive director of The Grotto, will preside over the blessing held outdoors in the central plaza. Individuals of all faiths are invited to bring their animals, properly restrained, to The Grotto. For more information call 503-254-7671.

St. Anne’s Summer Twilight: Saturday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. Celebrate the Feast of St. Anne by attending a twilight evening Mass and reflection outdoors in The Grotto’s central plaza. This special evening is an annual event and an invitation to take time out of our busy schedules to reflect on the life of the mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus, to pray for her intercession on our behalf and to celebrate Eucharist with the Servite community. For more information call 503-254-7371.

The Grotto is located on Sandy Boulevard at Northeast 85th Avenue.
