A taste of the bayou
A true Cajun chef has come to Parkrose. Baton Rouge-born Godfrey McAllister came to Portland with his family about one year ago, and he immediately saw the need for an authentic Cajun restaurant. In September 2002, he opened Cajun McKitchen.

McAllister is both the owner and the cook, and sometimes the waiter as well. Mouth-watering dishes include shrimp Creole, gumbos, po boys, “create your own” sub sandwiches, “Swamp salad” and much more.

Catering is available, and you can phone your order ahead as well. McAllister’s cousin is Duece McAllister of the New Orleans Saints, and a visit is planned for the spring, so sports fans are welcome.

Cajun McKitchen is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. Drop by today and taste true Cajun cooking at Cajun McKitchen, 10410 N.E. Sandy Blvd. For more information or to order ahead, please call Godfrey McAllister at 503-252-0288.

Get the finishing touch
If you have been thinking about a new look for your home, Finishing Touches Interior Design, Inc. is the place to go. This company in the Gateway area offers comprehensive interior design services. This company has two co-workers and owners, Dena Cassidy and Joyce Ward.

They met at Oregon State University, where they both earned Interior Design degrees. After they had been in the business for 21 years, they decided to start a business together. They called their business Finishing Touches because they stay with the client from beginning to end. This policy of commitment and involvement includes being at the final installation to supervise and make sure all the details are completed.

Their services include designing window coverings, reupholstering, wallpaper, plan consultation, room arrangement, artwork, tapestries, area rugs, shutters and window film. All services are offered with the bonus of convenience. Cassidy and Ward meet their clients in their homes and bring all their samples with them.

For more information, please call Finishing Touches Interior Design, Inc. at 503-499-1167. You can also stop by their Gateway store in 111th Square, at 11124 N.E. Halsey St.

Custom water fountains
Aztec Artistic Productions, Ltd., (AAP) is a Mid-County business, located at 15151 N.E. Hoyt St. This company produces custom-designed indoor and outdoor water fountains, made from a variety of natural stone and metals.

AAP was founded by John Xochihua, a 17-year veteran in the print and advertising industry. “I’m working on creating items that beautify your home or garden and which are specially suited for people who have small areas to work with,” he explained.

AAP’s water features aren’t typical fountains. They’re more like pieces of art that incorporate flowing water over the surfaces, gracefully aging and enhancing both stone and metal. “Freestanding or wall mounted, indoor or outdoor, the water features are designed to create tranquility in your home and life,” said Xochihua.

“Made from a variety of natural stone and metals like copper, they’re great enhancements to the entry to a home, in a patio or courtyard, or a business.” Floor space-always at a premium-is a special consideration acknowledged Xochihua.

A typical freestanding fountain is six to seven feet tall with water flowing down all four sides, yet it only takes up six square feet of floor space. Wall mounted pieces can take up six to ten square feet of wall space. “It’s my belief that more and more people will want this type of functional art. The impact it makes on the atmosphere of a home or business is very powerful...and yet graceful, peaceful.”

Other designs by Xochihua are “Plant Stands.” Not really meant for “gardening” in the traditional sense, the stands are more like vertical plug-and-play gardening for people who want to maximize their usage of small space.

The Plant Stands are not really arbors, trellises or topiaries. They’re vertical metal structures that incorporate a pot for planting, structure for the plant to grow up and a birdhouse, hummingbird feeder or other design element. Owners can plant climbing fragrant flowering vines like jasmine, Japanese honeysuckle, climbing roses, or vegetables such as sugar peas, pole beans, cherry tomatoes, and yes, even hops for brewing. The birdhouses or hummingbird feeders also attract desirable wildlife.

For more information, please call John Xochihua at Aztec Artistic Productions at 503-704-2463.
