Memo Pad... To fully serve the community, the Mid-county Memo offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers' lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors along with opportunities to participate in the community. Memo Pad submissions for the October issue are due Saturday, Sept. 15. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672. Candidate looks to polish gem that is HD47
Nelson, a Republican and long time resident of the district, credits her rural upbringing and exposure to urban life as an adult for her appreciation of both groups' needs. She describes the district as a gem that needs polishing, and believes by working with constituents she can make that happen. Her top priority will be to create and maintain a healthy business climate and living wage jobs. To do this, Nelson advocates for lower taxes and regulations on business. She also wants to delegate revenues to provide adequate funding for what she calls core functions: public safety, education and essential human services. She supports stable school funding, a partnership between education and workforce development and changes to the Public Employees Retirement System. Nelson currently serves on the Mt. Hood Community College Board of Education. She retired from teaching at St. Therese School in 2010. Changes by TriMet In addition to fare increases that have been put in effect this month, TriMet has reconfigured some lines to eliminate overlapping service and added new trips to other lines to help reduce overcrowding. In Parkrose, Line 12 will only run between the Tigard Transit Center and the Parkrose/Sumner Transit Center. A new line, the 21-Sandy Blvd/223rd, will serve the current Line 12 route between Gresham and Parkrose. For details on all fare changes and line updates, please visit trimet.org. Recycle event huge success St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and Recology Portland hosted a very successful plastic foam-recycling event last month. People came from as far away as Hillsboro, Aloha, Beaverton, Gresham, Damascus, and Vancouver. Two 40 cubic yard containers and a pickup truck were filled and people were turned away near the end of the event because the collection had reached capacity. Kiwanis Key Club returns to PHS After a brief hiatus, Parkrose High Kiwanis Key Club is being re-chartered. Key Club International, a student-led service organization for high school students, is sponsored by Kiwanis International. The Parkrose Key Club, under the supervision of Russellville Kiwanis members will work to develop leadership through school and community service. Watch for announcements of activities and fundraisers in future issues of the Memo. Become a green street steward
Among the sites in our area are Northeast Glisan Street near Glendoveer Golf Course, Northeast 122nd Avenue near Shaver Street and Northeast Fremont Street. Through this effort, Portland manages stormwater as a resource and adds green spaces to neighborhoods. Green streets also help clean the air, enhance street safety, and protect sewer ratepayers' investments in the piped collection system. Green streets help keep watersheds healthy and rivers and streams clean. Some community members have asked how they can participate in caring for green streets as a way to help the environment and build community. Now, through the Green Street Steward program, community members can adopt a green street and work with the city on green street care and maintenance. The city is still responsible for looking after green streets and ensuring they work properly. Green Street Stewards simply volunteer to help pick up trash, remove leaves and debris, and occasionally weed and water green street facilities. Partnerships between the city and community members contribute to Portland's beauty and enhance livability. Please consider becoming a Green Street Steward as a rewarding way to care for your community and keep Portland's rivers clean. To learn more or to volunteer, go to portlandonline.com/bes/GreenStreetStewards, call 503-823-7378 or email GreenStreetStewards@portlandoregon.gov. |
