Students can earn free passes The Lumberyard indoor mountain and BMX bike park has announced a new partnership with the Madison South Neighborhood Association to fund free passes for local high school students. At the suggestion of Madison South neighbors, The Lumberyard has created a special fund that the greater community can contribute to and The Lumberyard will set aside to provide park passes and programs to Madison High School students. The Lumberyard will match funds raised by the community. The after school program begins Sept. 17 for ages six to eighteen Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Madison High School administration will select students to receive the passes based upon varying factors including attendance and academic performance. Chairman of the Madison South Neighborhood Association, Dave Smith, said, This scholar award from the Lumberyard reflects the best of our business community working together with neighbors and the high school population. The program not only provides an incentive to do well in school, but also rewards student achievement by allowing these young people the opportunity to enjoy a great workout on a bike. We are delighted to have the Lumberyard as a part of Madison South. The Lumberyard is located at 2700 NE 82nd Ave., across the street from Madison High. Experienced leader joins PCS staff

Unique preschool settles in Hazelwood Runabouts Family Preschool, 206 SE 146th Ave., serves children from 2-1/2 to 5 in a dynamic, supportive and safe environment. Proprietor Melissa Schaefer has operated her play based open-ended preschool for five years. She moved to the Hazelwood neighborhood from southeast Portland in 2010. Schaefer believes that children learn by doing. Play provides opportunities for all the basics and then some. Play involves exploration, risk, trial and error, concentration, dedication, motivation, negotiation, inspiration, cooperation, and leadership-all the things that grow a healthy human, a life-long learner, and someone who can accomplish great things, she said. Children at Runabouts learn important social and educational concepts while engaged in developmentally appropriate play. Students help in the urban orchard, maintain a large garden and care for a flock of chickens outside and learn about reading, art, dance and drama inside.
