This year, east Portland will host the earliest ever Sunday Parkways event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 12. According to Linda Ginenthal of the Portland Bureau of Transportation, the sponsoring agency, the early date is a conscious attempt to include public schools in the festivities, and outer Southeast Portland was chosen for the kickoff because of the relatively large number of school-age children here. At the other end of the age continuum, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will be a sponsor for the first time.

During Sunday Parkways, auto traffic is banned from a roughly circular route, usually on local streets, for five hours to allow bicyclists and pedestrians to tour the area in a unique way. For the May event, nearly all of the route is on “green” streets designated as bike routes normally, plus a stretch along the car-free Springwater Corridor. In a departure this year, one lane of westbound auto traffic will be allowed on Southeast Bush Street, between 130th and 104th avenues, during the event.

As in previous years, there will be organized activity in parks, and vendors of food and information at various places along the route. There will be free dance and fitness classes, and the Oregon Trail Alliance's Skills Track bicycle obstacle course at Ed Benedict Park.

Cyclo Femme, a women's bicycle group, will have a demonstration of their skills at noon at Lents Park; there will also be live music and an exhibition of electric bikes there. Circus Cascadia, which teaches circus skills such as tightrope walking and juggling to children, will be part of a mini-festival near the Springwater Corridor. Marinello's School of Beauty will give free beauty tips at Glenwood Park. For more information, visi http://www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/46103.
