Involvement translates to pride in community

Maywood Park, Portland’s City within a City, is a bustling community that holds neighborhood events for nearly every conceivable occasion. Upcoming in June is the annual Best Lawn Contest. Winners will be recognized just ahead of Father’s Day. Those living in The Park are encouraged to participate and keep the neighborhood looking its best.

The Mayor and City Council want to remind residents that their city has some special ordinances that include permits for tree cutting. Also, in the interest of public safety, the City issues identification stickers for vehicles so Sheriffs can quickly identify who belongs in the area and who does not.

Bi-monthly City Council meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of each month. They use an agenda format, so citizens are encouraged to submit items for discussion prior to the meetings. This month the meetings will be on June 8 and 22 at 7 p.m. at Mt. Hood Community College, Maywood Park Campus, Northeast 102nd Avenue and Prescott Street.

Lots of effort creates new facilities, strawberries the reward
Sacramento Elementary School, 11400 N.E. Sacramento St., has been working on replacing their worn out playground structures for several years. Last year Steve Shapiro of Percival & Shapiro Landscape Architecture Planning developed a landscape and playground design for the school. The challenge for the Parent Teacher Organization, or PTO, was that Sacramento is a community recreational area as much as it is a school usage area. It is surrounded by baseball and soccer fields that are used almost year around by hundreds of adults and their children from all over the metro area.

The Parkrose School District allocated $15,000 to the playground project. However, the average installation today is running about $50,000 and there are two play areas. One for grades K through 2 and one for grades 3 through 5. As a result, the Sacramento PTO has turned all its energies to fundraising. They are working to match and top the District’s funds by the middle of July so that installation of the play equipment for K thru 2 students can begin. “It will be wonderful to watch their enthusiastic reaction to the new equipment when they start school in September,” says Susan Harris Roark, parent leader.

Earlier this year the students held a school - wide penny drive that raised almost $1,000 that was split between the playground fund and SnowCap.

The PTO is now taking orders for fresh strawberries produced by northwest growers. These berries are already washed and sliced and come in a 6 lb. bucket for $18 or a 14 lb. bucket for $30. The pick up date will be Friday, June11, at the school from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The grand finale for the year will be on this same day featuring a student Art Show and an Ice Cream Social with some of the fresh strawberries. Sacramento students are very excited about this event. An outdoor stage and mural are being readied for the activities. It was part of the landscape design to build a stage area outside where Sacramento teachers and students could put on plays, music, and assemblies. Bev Cordova from the Parkrose High School Art Department recruited some of her students to paint a mural on the back of the storage container that houses the stage. They are working diligently on this rather mammoth project for Sacramento’s Art Show and Strawberry Ice Cream Social trying to get it ready by Friday, June 11.

A unique feature about this community project is that it has used skills and resources from both the grade and high school.

If you would like to help or find out more, contact the school at 503-408-2801 or Susan Harris Roark at 503-256-2573.
