Spring high school activities round-up

It has long been understood that participation in extracurricular activities leads to better performance in the classroom. The Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All Stars list supports this and recognizes school teams and groups that have a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Each member of a winning team receives a coveted “got milk?” sweatshirt, a commemorative pin and a certificate. The school receives a plaque in honor of its winning team. Members of top ten schools in each activity at each classification are also recognized with a commemorative pin. Mid-county high schools are well represented on this list. The Portland Christian High choir ranked first in its division and will be sporting “got milk?” sweatshirts this summer.

To compliment this success in the classroom, area students also scored points at Oregon School Activities Association championships this spring.

In April, the state solo performers' championships were held at Lewis and Clark College. David Douglas' Isabel Skau is the clarinet champion, Martin Santoyo placed second in tuba and Josh Hudson placed second in tenor voice. Gabe Seymour of Reynolds High School is the mallets champion, the timpani champion and was second in the orchestra snare competition. Other Reynolds winners include Rachel Conway, French horn-4th place; Tim Berry, orchestra snare-5th place and timpani 4th place; Morgan Benbrook, trombone-4th place; and James Brown, viola-4th place. Parkrose High senior Debra Loh earned second place honors among bassoon players.

Band and orchestra competitions were held in May at LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. The David Douglas full orchestra, directed by Jennifer Brooks-Muller and Ben Brooks, came in third and the string orchestra, under the direction of Ben Brooks earned fourth place honors. The Portland Christian High band earned third place honors in the 2A/1A division. Kevin Sippel directs. Reynolds High placed fourth among full orchestras and Division 6A bands. They are directed by Justin Prunk.

More than 3600 students from 61 high schools around the state convened in Newberg in the Bauman Auditorium at George Fox University for state choir competitions. Portland Christian High grabbed the third place Division 2A/1A trophy under the direction of Daniel Burnett.

David Douglas golfer Patricia Little placed 9th in the state golf tournament. She helped her team finish 12th among Division 6A girls golf teams. The boys team also came in 12th at state.

Area baseball teams struggled this spring. Reynolds High made the state 6A tournament bracket but suffered a defeat and elimination in the first round of play at the hands of Sheldon High of Eugene. Portland Christian was held to only one game in Division 2A/1A tournament as well, losing to Lost River of Merrill in first round action.

Girls softball teams also faced some tough competition. David Douglas was defeated 3-1 by Forest Grove in the opening round of the Division 6A tournament.
