The Disciples emerge as champions The Catholic Youth Organization Football Jamboree for third and fourth graders was held on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Jesuit High School in Beaverton. The Region 9 Disciples, composed of students from St. Therese Elementary School and David Douglas School District elementary schools entered the tournament as decided underdogs. According to Scott Hendison, father of linebacker Mikkel Hendison, It was the most exciting day of football you could imagine. The boys gutted it out through three match ups in the morning to win the wildcard berth as one of the final four teams to play for the championship trophy in the afternoon. Each qualifying round contest went into double or triple overtime before the Disciples finally emerged as winners. Hendison went on to say that the games were intense, and every player contributed a clutch, key play contributing to victory. The first game of the championship round found the Disciples matched up against the number one seed Irish composed mainly of students from Holy Redeemer Catholic School in north Portland. The Irish were coming off an undefeated regular season, including a 40-18 drubbing of the Disciples. The Disciples continued their winning ways by defeating the Irish and advancing through the double elimination tournament without a loss. They are the 2006 CYO Region 9 champions. We hope they remember it as long as their parents will. The Disciples are coached by Nick Vanoudenhaegen, Jim Gabriel, Jacob Fischer, Tee Mackley and Troy Lyver.
