SCHOOL CORNER
Parent workshops continue
Parent workshops at Sacramento Elementary School continue in January and run through March.

Workshops, presented by Sacramento in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Oregon Partnership, are scheduled for Jan. 10, 17, 24 and 31; Feb. 2, 7; and March 2.

Dinner will be provided starting at 6 p.m.; presentations will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sacramento Elementary School is located at 11400 N.E. Sacramento St. Child care and activities for youth also will be provided.

The workshops are part of a series that has addressed developing parent and community networks, parenting with “Love and Logic,” and helping children be more successful in school.

Become a SMART volunteer at Mill Park
Start Making A Reader Today helps students develop a love for books and reading so that they can read to learn. SMART needs volunteers who can spend at least one hour per week at Mill Park Elementary reading with kindergarten through third grade students.

The SMART program at Mill Park Elementary operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. and from noon to 3 p.m.

Winter registration begins at MHCC
Winter term registration for students new to Mt. Hood Community College begins Dec. 1, for classes starting Jan. 9.

Returning students may register either on the Web at www.mhcc.edu, or by using Touch-Tone registration by calling 503-491-6000.

Anyone new to the college who is taking six or more credits is invited to come to the student services offices at the MHCC Gresham campus, 26000 S.E. Stark St., to submit an admission form. The admission form is also available online at www.mhcc.edu and can be faxed to 503-491-7388. Current office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For those taking non-credit classes, phone registrations may be made by contacting MHCC’s Community Education department at 503-491-7572, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

People requiring accommodations due to a disability should contact the MHCC Disability Services Office at 503-491-6923 or 503-491-7670 (TDD).

Christmas revue at care facility
The Kiwanis Christmas Revue returns to Firwood Gardens, 819 N.E. 122nd Ave., on the evening of Thursday, Dec. 8. You, your friends and family are invited to sip eggnog and nibble on holiday treats while you enjoy singing, dancing and storytelling at this free event.

Party planned at senior community
Oregon Baptist Retirement Homes is planning its annual Holiday Open House and you are invited. Take this opportunity to see one of Portland’s premiere not-for-profit retirement communities that offers independent and assisted living options.

Holiday refreshments, seasonal music and gifts will surely get you in the spirit of the season. The fun is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tours of the 6-acre campus will be available.

You may be eligible for free locks
The Portland Police Bureau manages a Senior Locks Program that installs, at absolutely no cost, deadbolt locks and other security hardware on the houses of eligible senior homeowners.

To qualify you must be 55 years or older, own or be buying the house you are living in (renters are not eligible), live within the Portland city limits and fall in certain limited income categories.

Mill Park neighborhood plans holiday fun
Neighborhood associations work throughout the year to improve and enhance the livability of our neighborhoods. To be effective, they need you to be involved. If you do not know which neighborhood association serves you, contact the East Portland Neighborhood Office, 735 S.E. 106th Ave., at 503-823-4550 or epno@epno.org.

Many groups will not meet in December. A schedule appears below.

East Portland Neighbors, Inc will conduct its annual meeting at EPNO, 735 S.E. 106th Ave., on Wednesday, Dec. 7 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Harold Oliver Intermediate School, 15840 S.E. Taylor St., is the location of the Centennial Community Association general membership meeting on Monday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13 the Mill Park Neighborhood Association will host a holiday gathering in the East Precinct Community Room, 737 S.E. 106th Ave. This will be your opportunity to mingle with neighbors and meet Portland Police Bureau’s Neighborhood Response Team Officer Mike Gallagher. Refreshments will be served. Donations of toys and non-perishable food items will be collected for the Portland Police Sunshine Division. This special event begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Hazelwood Neighborhood Association board will meet on Monday, Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Russellville Park, 20 N.E. 103rd Ave.

Group to install officers and board
At the regular monthly meeting of the Gateway Area Business Association on Thursday, Dec. 8, the slate of officers and directors for 2006 will be installed. The meeting, at JJ North’s Grand Buffet, 10520 N.E. Halsey St., begins at 11:45 a.m.

Converting a home to a business
The city of Portland Bureau of Development Services December public education, discussion and feedback session will focus on requirements that will need to be met in what is called a change of occupancy to convert a residence to a commercial operation. Topics to be explored include:
• Changing a single family home to retail, office or commercial kitchen space.
• What is a change of occupancy? What to know before you start a project.
• Permits, plan review and submittal requirements for change of occupancy.
• Understanding potential costs and where to go for more information.

This free event sponsored by the Bureau of Development Services is open to the public. Bring a lunch at noon on Friday, Dec. 9 to learn all about it. The meeting will be in the second floor conference room (2500-A) in the 1900 S.W. 4th Avenue Building.

Hockey, music and an auction
The Parkrose Business Association will forego its monthly business meeting in favor of a special holiday dinner on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

Dean “Scooter” Vrooman, the voice of the Portland Winter Hawks hockey team, will be the guest speaker. The Parkrose High School singing group the Debonnaires will entertain and as always there will be a scrumptious buffet prepared by Chef Edgar of Steamers.

A silent auction to benefit the PBA Scholarship Fund, awards, door prizes, and lots of fun will fill out the evening. Price per person is $22, which includes gratuity. Pay at the door. If you have questions, call 503- 257-3229.
