We prefer e-mailed letters to the editor sent to Darlene Vinson, at editor@midcountymemo.com. Please put letter to the editor in the subject line. You may also mail your letter to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave., Portland, OR 97230 or fax it to 503-249-7672. To the Editor, I would like to help clarify the excellent news stories that were circulated a while ago, concerning the work of the Oregon Food Bank. While the Food Bank does a tremendous job of distributing low or no cost food to local food pantries, they distribute very few food boxes themselves. When news sources report that the Oregon Food Bank distributes 780,000 food boxes each year, most readers and listeners do not understand that it is the neighborhood pantries that are actually packing the food boxes and delivering them to our neighbors in need. At our neighborhood pantry, SnowCAP, most of our food does not come from the Oregon Food Bank. In order to pack and distribute 24,000 food boxes each year we rely on almost 200 volunteers and over 2,000 local donors. Recognition of these unsung volunteers and donors would give a more complete picture of how this battle against hunger is being waged throughout the state. Obviously, we are only one neighborhood pantry. There are over 500 such pantries around the state that help to distribute those 780,000 food boxes each year. Thanks to all of them, families at least have some food on their tables. Sincerely, Rev. Charles Ross SnowCAP Chairman of the Board 503-252-1570 |
