SENIOR RESOURCES Elder Friendly businesses Think the holiday season is hectic? Try navigating busy retail stores with a cane or walker, or attempting to read price tags with impaired vision. Thats the reality for many elderly adults as they confront a busy holiday shopping season that can be difficult, frightening and at worst, dangerous - especially for those who are frail or have medical problems. Some special businesses have undergone extensive evaluations to certify themselves as Elder-Friendly. In the Greater Portland area, Fred Meyer, Klein Jewelers and Portland Nursery are only a few of the businesses that serve their elderly customers with pride and a guarantee of safety. Elder Friendly candidates undergo an extensive evaluation by trained volunteers from Elders in Action to make sure they are serving the special needs of elderly customers. From making sure lights are bright enough and aisles are wide enough to ensuring signs are readable and doors are easily opened. Evaluators work together with retailers to discuss and make needed improvements. Businesses that pass the evaluation are certified and display the blue and yellow Elder Friendly decal, and are included in the Elder Friendly Business Certified Directory.
