Gary Kjenslee succumbs to cancer

Gary Kjenslee
1943-2010
East Portland businessman and Gresham resident Gary Kjenslee succumbed to kidney cancer Saturday, June 26 in the loving presence of his family. He was 66.

A memorial service was held last month; Gresham Memorial Chapel handled the arrangements.

Gary was born Nov. 16, 1943 in Brookings, S.D. to Lee and LaVonne Kjenslee.

The family moved to Oregon in 1944. Gary attended Powell Valley Grade School and graduated from Gresham High School in 1961. Upon graduation, he started working at the Benson Hotel as a bellman, eventually working his way up to bell captain.

Gary married Nancy Currier April 3, 1964 in Gresham.

In 1973 Westin Hotels transferred him to Kansas City, Mo., then to Los Angeles in 1976.

In 1985, after 23 years in the hotel business, Gary and his family returned to mid-Multnomah County and purchased Parkrose Mowers from Bert Visser, which the family continues to operate.

At one time they had two locations, one in Gateway, Mowers 'n' More, and the original Parkrose Mower.

After consolidating to the one location in Parkrose, they moved to Gateway last year.

Gary was a member in good standing of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Gresham Aerie #2151.

He was an ardent sports fan; he liked the Blazers, played in golf and bowling leagues and enjoyed watching televised football and baseball games. He loved baseball and coached his sons' Little League teams.

Survivors include his wife Nancy; sons Brad, Jason and Kevin; stepdaughter Jody; mother LaVonne Kjenslee; brother Robert; sisters Darla Mormance, Karen Lewis and Lonnie Henry; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Memorial contributions in Gary's name can be made to Providence Cancer Center, 4805 N.E. Glisan St., Portland, OR 97213.
