The Mid-county Memo is your newspaper. We want to hear from you. Discuss an important issue or address a concern you want to call to the community’s attention. We prefer e-mailed letters to the editor sent to Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Please put “Letter to the editor” in the subject line. You may also mail your letter to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave., Portland, OR 97230 or fax it to 503-249-7672. The deadline for the September issue is Friday, August 15.

Cruise-In cronyism?
If the Parkrose Business Association wants everyone in Parkrose to be involved in their Cruise-In (“Cruise-In: From schoolyard to boulevard,” July 2008) then why are they bringing in outside vendors like Boss Hawg’s Bar ‘N Grill from the Gateway area to run their beer garden?

Why didn’t they ask a Parkrose bar or tavern owner if they would like to run a beer garden? Or better yet, why not promote the bars, restaurants and taverns they are (restricting) access to during this event?

To me, it looks like if you’re not a member of their club, you’re not going to be acknowledged. That’s too bad because I thought that’s what a business association is supposed to do: promote the businesses inside their community. Maybe that’s the reason years ago I chose not to continue being a member of the PBA: I found out how things work in Parkrose.

Asked about Kunberger’s concerns, Parkrose Business Association officer Marsha Lee responds:

Everyone’s invited
The (Cruise-In) committee did not solicit vendors. People heard about the festival and called or e-mailed requesting to be a vendor.

We extended an invitation to all Parkrose merchants to get involved in the festival by having sidewalk sales and other ways to get people inside their establishments.

I know that at least one bar is having a barbecue with a beer garden. That is wonderful and the bar owner is very supportive of the event and wants to get involved. There is no reason that any restaurant, bar, etc., in Parkrose can’t do the same thing.

I might mention that Boss Hawg’s Bar ‘N Grill has been a supporter of the Cruise-In for the last several years and wanted to continue (working) with us. They offered to have a beer and wine garden and donate part of the proceeds to the Parkrose Business Foundation. It was a generous offer.
