Middle Eastern festival planned
The parish of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church will host its 31st annual Middle Eastern Festival on Sunday, Sept. 7 from noon to 7 p.m. at 2101 N.E. 162nd Ave.

St. George members started the event in 1972 to celebrate the community’s unique heritage and to share fun, food, and excitement with their neighbors while raising money for church projects.

This popular annual event will once again feature a delicious Middle Eastern style chicken dinner, including salad, Loubia-bi-Lahm (Mediterranean-style green beans), Roz-be-Shairya (rice with vermicelli), Arabic bread, pastries, and coffee or milk. Outdoors, the succulent smells of roasting meats and spicy falafel will mix with the aroma of Arabic coffee. Booths will sell gyros, Arabic coffee and a variety of beverages.

Aladdin’s Café will provide the dinner and Majdolin Mediterranean Cuisine will provide falafel, finger foods and Arabic sweets.

Entertainment will include Middle Eastern folk dancing, music and a children’s tent with games and activities for the young ones. Icons, jewelry, books and CDs, as well as wonderful baked goods will be offered for sale inside the parish hall, and a silent auction will feature donated items. For those interested, church tours will be offered periodically throughout the afternoon. Since the last festival, the church’s half-domes have been adorned with icons painted by Russian iconographer, Dmitry Shkolnik. This is a great opportunity to see these wonderful icons and learn about how they are used in Orthodox Christian worship.

Tickets for the dinner and tokens for the outdoor booths are available at the door. Dinner is $12 for adults and $6 for children. For more information, visit www.stgeorgeportland.org or call 503-255-6055.
