Colleen Lawpaugh: Over 30 years at U.S. Bank

Beginning at U.S. Bank as a teenage clerk, Colleen Lawpaugh rose to head local branches of what has become the sixth-largest bank in the country. This photo was taken during the Airport Branch’s 2006 4th of July Celebration.

In 1973, as a junior at Madison High School in east Portland, Colleen Lawpaugh enrolled in an employment-for-credit program. She entered the Sandy Boulevard branch of U.S. Bank, then a homegrown bank confined to Oregon, as a part-time clerk responsible for processing the multitude of paperwork that governed bank transactions at the time.

After graduation, the bank invited her into the ranks of tellers. From there Lawpaugh would progress to the safe deposit box station, followed by a platform position handling new accounts, and eventually to branch manager, a title she has held at six successive branches including the Gateway, Menlo Park and Argay Square Office. She now heads the Airport Branch, a flagship of U.S. Bank’s new on-site branches installed in hubs such as travel concourses, universities and hospitals.

Lawpaugh advanced with the automation revolution as technological conveniences eradicated the paperwork of her early days and passbooks and signature cards ceded to automated teller machines and personal identification numbers. She also married in this time raised two children who passed through the Parkrose School District, and is now a grandmother.

U.S. Bank has since expanded into the sixth-largest commercial bank in the country. As branch manager, Lawpaugh focuses on continuing that growth and credits the bank’s Five Star Guarantee, which emphasizes the bank’s accessibility, responsiveness and expediency. To each branch under her direction, Lawpaugh has added her compassion for her customers, bank and community.

“My very favorite part of my job is my customers and employees. All the other things will come if you treat those people right,” she said.

Nearly 35 years ago, Lawpaugh took a part-time job that fortuitously evolved into a career that carried her through to grandparenthood. She wouldn’t think of doing anything else. She explained, “I think that our community is a great community, and I think that U.S. bank has been good to my family. They’re a great company to work for, and I love what I do.”
