Memo Pad...

To fully serve the community, the Mid-county Memo offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers’ lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors.

Memo Pad submissions for the September issue are due by Tuesday, Aug. 15. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail editorial submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672.

National champs return to roots
Eddie Kunz and Kevin Gunderson were on hand at recent opening ceremonies of the District 1 Little League All Star Tournaments for both 9-10 year olds and 11-12 year olds. Products of Parkrose Little League, Kunz and Gunderson are both pitchers for Oregon State University. They had been home from Omaha, Neb., where the Beavers were crowned national champions for only a few days when they were asked to participate in the ceremonial first pitch at their hometown tournaments.

Kunz, a hard-throwing reliever, is now in Falmouth, Mass., playing for the Falmouth Condors in the Cape Cod Pitching League. He is tuning up for a run at a third Pac-10 championship in as many seasons and a return trip to Omaha. His parents are Ray and Sue Kunz.

Gunderson, the Beavers’ highly touted closer, was drafted by the Atlanta Braves and is now participating in rookie camps in preparation for a pro career. Kevin’s parents are Brent and Phoebe Gunderson.

State VFW taps Mid-county vet
Dan Wakefield has been named the commander of the Oregon Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A long-time Mid-Multnomah County resident, Wakefield was born in Nebraska. He moved with his family to Vanport, Ore., in 1943. He attended Roosevelt High School in North Portland until 1948 when he joined the United States Marine Corps.

Wakefield is a Korean War veteran. He retired from the Corps in 1960.

He first became a VFW member at a post in Stevenson, Wash., in 1952. He served as post commander there for two years.

Upon moving to Oregon in 1960, Wakefield became even more active in the VFW and was soon seeking state office. He credits his company commander in Korea, retired Col. Robert Wray, for promoting his leadership skills. Edwin McGlothin, Harold Jordan and Lynn Dennis, now deceased, were all members of VFW who encouraged Wakefield’s advance through the state organization. The new state commander has pledged to dedicate his year at the helm to these four men who he says have been major influences in his life. Wakefield, now retired, worked as a real estate broker in Portland for over thirty years and owned Homeseekers Realty in Mid-county.

VFW provides support for active duty military personnel and their families and is a community service organization that promotes American history and citizenship.

The Oregon Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is located at 12440 N.E. Halsey St. Contact Commander Wakefield and the VFW at 503-255-5808.
