CHURCHES
Archaeology becomes tool for learning
Parkrose United Methodist Church will hold its Adventure of the Treasure Seekers Vacation Bible School from Sunday, Aug. 20-Thursday, Aug. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Children will have the opportunity to become real archaeologists as they pick up their tools and go on daily Discovery Digs. Each day they’ll search for a treasure to remind them of the daily Bible story. Activities will include storytelling, music, crafts, outdoor games, snacks, and a community service project. Programs for teens and adults will be available as well.

This free program is open to everyone in the community. To reserve your space, please contact the church office at 503-253-7567.

FUNDRAISERS
The Parkrose Bronco Boosters are at Parkrose Middle School, 11800 N.E. Shaver St., on the first Saturday of each month to collect your returnable cans and bottles from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Drop by with your empties on Saturday, Aug. 5. Your donation supports students at Parkrose High School.

THE ARTS
Rep celebrates 10 years with festival
Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company’s 10th anniversary American Classics Theatre Festival is underway at Mt. Hood Community College, 26000 S.E. Stark St. in Gresham. Productions slated for the festival include Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me a Tenor” and Gordon McKay’s “Sea Marks.” New this year, tickets are good for any performance. No reservations are needed.

Artistic Director Tobias Andersen will direct “Lend Me a Tenor.” This award-winning comedy has been hailed as the one of the funniest farces to appear on Broadway. As the Cleveland Grand Opera prepares for one of its biggest nights in history, world famous tenor Tito Merelli’s appearance on stage seems highly unlikely. But as we all know, the show must go on, even if it means sending a replacement on stage. In this case, it is the petrified-with-fright production assistant.

Associate Artistic Director Trisha Pancio-Armour will direct “Sea Marks,” a tale of a simple fisherman who discovers a poetic inner voice when he begins writing to a publisher’s assistant he meets at a cousin’s wedding. But when she decides to publish his intimate letters about life on the sea as a book of poetry, he is made into an instant celebrity, and their simple love affair suddenly becomes very complex.

Performances continue through Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. “Lend Me a Tenor” is on the main stage. “Sea Marks” appears in the studio theater. General admission tickets are $20. Seniors and students will pay $15. Festival passes are available for $34 and $28 respectively.

Information and tickets are available by calling The Rep at 503-491-5950, online at www.mthoodrep.org, or visit The Rep’s office at 12 N.E. 2nd St. in downtown Gresham.

EVENTS
Business group plans street fair
The Montavilla/East Tabor Business Association will host the Montavilla Street Fair on Saturday, Aug. 5, on Southeast Stark Street between 76th and 82nd avenues. Contact Alema McCray, association president, at 503-318-5741 to find out more.

“Dive-In Movies” offer swimming and cinema
Nothing says summer like swimming and blockbuster movies. Portland Parks & Recreation’s Aquatic Division will combine the two, offering exciting cinema with its Dive-In Movies.

Everyone will enjoy watching this summer’s movie “Madagascar” on a large screen visible from the warm pool water. Viewers can watch from the pool or deck. Floating filmgoers may bring their own inner tubes or air mattresses.

The cost for the Dive-In Movie is $3.50 for adults and $2.00 for children. The pool water is warm for comfortable viewing and extra underwater lighting and lifeguards will be brought in to ensure safety. And like all good theaters, the pools will offer popcorn, candy and other concessions. Without the sticky floor!

“Madagascar” will be shown at Montavilla Pool, 8219 N.E. Glisan St. on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 8 p.m.

For more information on Dive-In Movies or other aquatic special events, call the Aquatics Division at 503-823-5130.

Drop off hazardous waste for free
Metro Recycling sponsors free household hazardous waste collection events that take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every week (except Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends) between early March and mid-November in many communities across the Portland tri-county area. There is one scheduled at Alice Ott Middle School, 12500 S.E. Ramona St. on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 25 and 26. These events are small, frequent and community friendly.

Household hazardous waste is accepted year round at Metro’s two permanent household hazardous waste facilities - Metro Central Station at 6161 N.W. 61st Ave. in Portland and Metro South Station at 2001 Washington St. in Oregon City. Last year, residents disposed of more than 640,000 pounds of hazardous waste at Metro’s collection events. Be sure to prepare materials properly. There is a 35-gallon limit per load, and no containers larger than five gallons.

There is no charge to bring your toxic trash to Metro’s permanent facilities or community events. The true cost of processing an average load of household hazardous waste is approximately $85. A small portion of your monthly garbage bill goes to help pay for these services. Metro recycles most of what it collects and disposes of the rest in a landfill specifically designed for hazardous waste. Metro recycles latex paint and sells it in one-gallon cans and five-gallon pails. For more information, call Metro Recycling Information at 503-234-3000 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The hearing impaired can call TDD 503-797-1804.
