Memo Letters ...

The Mid-county Memo is your newspaper. We want to hear from you. Discuss an important issue or address a concern you want to call to the community’s attention. We prefer e-mailed letters to the editor sent to Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Please put “Letter to the editor” in the subject line. You may also mail your letter to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave., Portland, OR 97230 or fax it to 503-249-7672. The deadline for the October issue is Monday, Sept. 15.

Gateway resident decries neglect
I live in the Gateway area and see lots of cleaning up going on. The streets will look a lot nicer on Northeast 102nd Avenue between Halsey and wherever the work finishes, but what about the initial area to Gateway along Halsey coming from the west and on Weidler coming from east? The Welcome to Gateway sign and surrounding area near the Washington Mutual Bank looks poverty-stricken and neglected. There should be a lovely introduction to this area that is so neglected. I would suggest a bigger arch with flower beds and trees welcoming one into the Gateway area.

Thank you for listening to my concerns.

New streetcar route not necessary
Regarding the Streetcar System Plan (“Streetcar supporters, foes battle it out,” Mid-county Memo, August 2008), I believe there is one proposal to run a streetcar on Stark and Washington from Montavilla east to 122nd Avenue. Why spend money on streetcar tracks when better bus service would meet our needs?

I propose a bus line from city center on Stark/Washington to 122nd Avenue. The current #20 bus on Burnside and Stark, and the #15 bus from Parkrose to Adventist Medical Center (Southeast 102nd Avenue and Main Street) (continuing) on to Stark and Belmont makes a bad connection near Mall 205. The transfer stops are several blocks apart, making transfer difficult.
