Memo Calendar (continued) SCHOOL CORNER Its your school, your future Shaver Elementary School, 3701 N.E. 131st Pl., begins the school year with a bang. The following activities will involve the school community and the surrounding neighborhood. Here is your chance to get involved. Shaver Community Unity Walk Around Saturday, Sept. 11 is National Patriot Day and the perfect time to go out into the community and promote unity and outreach. The walk around will involve going into the Parkrose community and introducing Shaver as a school of growth and service. Students, parents, teachers and staff will distribute information about programs and events that are available at Shaver along with pre-stamped postcards asking for volunteers and input from the community. The event starts at 10 a.m. and will end at noon. If you are interested in participating, please call Sara at 503-408-2892. Open House and barbeque You are invited to Shaver Elementary to enjoy a barbeque and book fair on Tuesday, Sept. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. It will be a night of family fun where kids can show off their rooms, teachers and school. Fun for the whole family The Shaver Parent Faculty Association is seeking a grant from Nickelodeon. In addition to the grant application, successful applicants will display broad based community ties. To that end, Shaver Elementary will participate in Nickelodeons Worldwide Day of Play on Saturday Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. SPFA will provide organized games and play for kids and families creating the opportunity for a community wide day of fun. Your participation will help SPFA meet its goal. Special event for new students Students planning to attend Mt. Hood Community College in the fall are invited to a new student orientation session on Sept. 23. This half-day event is designed to teach new students how to get the most out of their college experience. The orientation session will provide opportunities to meet new and current students, tour the campus, meet with faculty and advisers, and learn about college resources. A free lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the session. Family members are also invited to attend a special session designed to explain what kind of support and understanding their student needs to succeed in school. Childcare will be provided from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The new student orientation is set for Thursday, Sept. 23, and runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be held at the main mall of Gresham campus at 26000 S.E. Adults 50+ are invited to become OASIS Intergenerational Reading Tutors and share their love of reading with children in first through third grade. Free training, supplies and monthly support meetings are provided. Work one-on-one with a child for an hour a week. Stark St., on Tuesday Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. For health, welfare and peace of mind The YWCA Mid County District Center runs the Cherry Blossom Senior Services program office, which hosts the following health, legal and social groups. All groups meet at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. Fall osteoporosis and arthritis class begins Gentle weight-bearing exercise and balancing techniques are ways to prevent and stabilize osteoporosis and arthritis. A class offering such exercises will begin this fall for men and women suffering from these ailments. Participants will also learn about health and nutrition and how to increase their activity level. The next session begins Monday, Oct. 4 and runs through Dec. 20. The class meets Mondays from noon to 1 p.m. at the East Portland Community Center. Participants should register at the first class. Diabetes support program Healthy Changes for Living with Diabetes is a free, educational-support program for people 55 years or older with Type-2 diabetes. The program, using materials developed by the Providence Center on Aging, meets on Mondays from 1:15 to 3 p.m. beginning Sept. 13. Participants must be 55 years of age or older. Those interested should pre-register by calling Abby Kennedy at 503-988-6073. New writing and book discussion groups A Write Your Life Story and Journal Writing group meets Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon. A Book Discussion group meets the last Tuesday of each month at the same time and location. The group is open to all and participants select and read a variety of fiction and nonfiction. Multnomah County residents 60 years and older are eligible for a free half-hour consultation with an attorney. Appointments are necessary. To sign up, please call 503-988-6073. SHIBA Clinic Volunteers with the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance program help people work through the Medicare maze. They assist both seniors and people with disabilities make informed choices on how to receive Medicare benefits, file claims and appeals, and understand their rights. Appointments are required. For more information, call 503-988-6073. OSU Extension Group The Russellville Oregon State University extension group is seeking new participants of all ages. This educational and activity-oriented group focuses on family and community-related topics. The group meets the first Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning Sept. 2.
