SCHOOL CORNER
Homecoming at DDHS
The week of Oct. 6 is homecoming week at David Douglas High School. A host of activities are planned for students, culminating with the homecoming football game against Hood River on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.

Family drawing class at Gilbert Park
Join your children in the journey to art appreciation. Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 7 and continuing through Dec. 9, the Gilbert Park SUN School, 12839 S.E. Holgate Blvd., is offering a family drawing class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Parents, guardians and adult family members may attend this class with their school-aged children and together learn about lines, shading and composition. This class is free and offered to all families in the David Douglas school district. All skill levels are encouraged to register. Materials are provided. Space is limited. Sacramento students will walk and bike to school
As part of its school-wide effort to continue building a healthy and safe community, Sacramento Elementary School is participating in the International Walk + Bike to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in partnership with the city of Portland Safe Routes to Schools. Parents, staff and students will be meeting at starting points that morning and riding or walking to school together on designated safe routes. Students have learned about pedestrian and biking safety and can win prizes for participating, including new bike helmets. The goal is to have a record number of students walk and bike and to encourage healthy and safe ways of commuting to school. All members of the Parkrose community are invited to join in this campaign.

Bronco alumni invited
On Friday, Oct. 17 the Parkrose High Broncos will host Madras High School at its homecoming football game. The Parkrose Athletic Boosters invite all PHS grads to return to their alma mater for this annual event. There will be a special section where alumni can mingle and renew that old Bronco spirit. Tickets are $5; the experience will be priceless.

Handwriting volunteers needed
The David Douglas school district occupational therapy department is seeking volunteers to support children with additional handwriting practice. Materials and training are provided. This commitment involves working with elementary students for 30 minutes at least once a week. Skills required include handwriting capabilities, both printing and cursive, the ability to enjoy children and to be able to sit for 20-30 minutes at a time. MEETINGS
Zenger Farm to host EMSWCD
The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, which includes all of Multnomah County east of the Willamette River, will hold its regular monthly board of directors meeting on Monday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. at Zenger Farm, 11741 S.E. Foster Road. The meeting will be preceded by a tour of the farm at 5 p.m. Please meet at the farmhouse. The meeting agenda will include preparations for the Oregon Association of Conservation Districts Convention, discussion of the district’s revised public records and safety policies, supplemental budget considerations and other items of business. The planning begins
Allison Newman-Woods, chair of the 2009 Parkrose Educational Foundation dinner and auction, has selected Monday, Oct. 6 for the first planning meeting of this annual fundraiser. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Parkrose High School library, 12003 N.E. Shaver St.

Russellville Kiwanis meet each Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. at the Refectory Restaurant, 1618 N.E. 122nd Ave. October programs include: a board meeting on Oct. 7, Edith Murillo and Joe Sixta of DayBreak Family Shelter will speak on Oct. 21 and Parkrose School District Superintendent Karen Fischer Gray will be the guest on Oct. 28.

Russellville Kiwanis members are selling 2009 Entertainment Books for $20. The club directs proceeds to various community groups such as SnowCap Community Charities, DayBreak Family Shelter, Parkrose Little League and the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for Disabled Individuals.

City policy goes green
Learn how the city of Portland is proposing to reduce carbon emissions from buildings, create jobs and improve health through its Green Building Policy at the monthly Bureau of Development Services brown bag Lunch and Learn session on Friday, Oct. 10 at noon. Bring a lunch and join the discussion downtown at 1900 S.W. 4th Ave., Conference Room 2500-A.

Diverse agenda at upcoming PBA meeting
City of Portland police officer Greg Baldwin is the scheduled guest speaker at the Parkrose Business Association meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16. He will share the stage with PBA member “Junkin’ Joe” Doud of Junk Away Hauling. The meeting begins at 11:30 a.m. at Steamers Restaurant & Lounge, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

The PBA board will meet a week earlier on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 a.m. at Pony Soldier Inn, 9901 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

Calling all Celts
The All-Ireland Cultural Society of Oregon will begin its 70th year in Portland with a meeting on Saturday, Oct.18 at 7 p.m. at the Oregon Stamp Society Building, 4828 N.E. 33rd Ave.

The society is a nonprofit organization that promotes social opportunities and cultural information to those of Irish descent and others with an interest in Irish culture and history.

Club members to plant trees
Flower Lane Garden Club meets Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at Oregon Baptist Retirement Home, 1825 N.E. l08th Ave. The program will be about Northwest trees and will feature Karl Dawson, a certified arborist from Portland Parks & Recreation. After lunch the group will move to Northeast Siskiyou Street and 122nd Avenue next to the I-84 entrance to plant trees. You are invited to join in. Mum expert to speak
Beautiful fall chrysanthemums are showing their colors now. Learn proper care and feeding at the next Villa Garden Club meeting on Friday, Oct. 24. Clair Kidd, a longtime member of the Chrysanthemum Society, will share her knowledge. Rummage sale at St. Aidan’s
If you are in the market for gently used furniture, kitchen tools, books, tapes, CDs, children’s clothing or other household items, you are sure to find what you’re looking for at the St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church rummage sale.

The sale is set for Friday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, Northeast 174th Avenue and Glisan Street.

Enjoy a German feast
The Rivercrest Community Church’s annual German sausage dinner is Saturday, Oct. 4. Service begins at 4:30 and ends at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $10 for adults, $5 for youth 6 to 12 and children 5 and under are admitted free. The church is located at 3201 N.E. 148th Ave.

Pets in the pews
St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church will commemorate St. Francis of Assisi on Sunday, Oct. 5 with a blessing of animals at the 10 a.m. Eucharist. Those special family members, whether they are dogs, cats, fish, rabbits, birds or gerbils, are invited to share the joy and peace of the pews with their people.

Honoring the animals that are significant to us in our own life marks the importance of the life of St. Francis of Assisi. All animals are welcome for the blessing, including stuffed animals and photos or mementos of animals that have departed this life. All animals must be suitably restrained appropriate to their species.

Scripture seminar at The Grotto
Join Bible scholar Kevin Saunders when he returns to The Grotto on Saturday, Oct. 11 to make an exciting presentation on the first 11 chapters of the book of Genesis. This section of Genesis contains stories of beginnings and includes the creation account, the Garden of Eden story, the first murder in the world, long lives, sin, the stories of the flood, a second chance and the Tower of Babel. Saunders will read and comment on the entire narrative from beginning to end, so bring a Bible and a friend.

The $40 fee includes lunch and an elevator token to the upper level gardens. The seminar will take place in The Grotto Conference Center. Retreat participants are asked to bring a Bible with them to the seminar. Please register by Oct.7 at 503-254-7371 or spirituality@thegrotto.org.

Voter registration available locally
Register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election no later than Tuesday, Oct. 14th. You can do so at the Parkrose Community United Church of Christ, Northeast 105th Avenue and Wygant Street on Oct. 1, 3, 6, 8, 10 and 13 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 5 to 7 p.m.

Spiritual retreat for women
Catholic women in Northwest Oregon are invited to attend the annual day of recollection of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Our Lady of Peace Retreat House, 3600 S.W. 170th Ave., in Beaverton.

The Rev. Charles E. Zach, pastor of St. Helen Parish in Junction City, Ore., and St. Rose of Lima Parish in Monroe, Ore., will direct the retreat. The theme is Weaving Scripture into our Spiritual Life.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. The fee is $25. Mass will be served at 11:30 followed by a luncheon at noon. The retreat will conclude at 3 p.m.

FUNDRAISERS
Legion to host garage sale
The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 1, 1830 S.E. 122nd Ave, will hold a garage sale on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They promise lots of good stuff that you just can’t live without. Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary’s children, youth and veteran’s programs.

Pancake breakfast and Nordic film fest
Get in touch with your inner Scandinavian on Sunday, Oct.12 at the annual Sons of Norway all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast. The meal includes pancakes, eggs, sausages, fresh fruit, compote, orange juice and coffee or tea. Service begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs to 1 p.m. The fee is $6 for adults, $3 for children 5 to 12 and children under 5 are admitted free.

The Reel Nordic Film Festival begins at noon and will feature a selection of Scandinavian films. The last showing begins at 6 p.m. There will be films suitable for children.

Rummage sale supports community
The deacons of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 12505 N.E. Halsey St., have planned a rummage sale for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be lots of household items, books, furniture and much more for sale.

Proceeds from the sale will help support ongoing community projects of the deacons, which include SnowCap Community Charities, Good Shepherd Women’s Shelter, hospital chaplains and drop-in emergency support.

Elks to serve up spaghetti
Gateway Elks Lodge will host its 19th Annual Charity Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 2 from noon to 6 p.m. The lodge is located at 711 N.E. 100th Ave.

The funds from this dinner are used to support various youth charities in Multnomah County including the Children’s Eye Clinic in the Casey Eye Institute, Scout recognition awards, scholarships for high school seniors, the Elks annual co-ed free-throw contest and Meadowood Springs Speech and Hearing Camp. Funds are also used to fill and distribute 275 food baskets during the Christmas season.

Held in conjunction with the Gateway Elkettes Christmas Bazaar, this all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner is $6 for adults, $3 for children under 12 and free to children under 3.
