400 kids benefit from organized soccer The Parkrose Soccer Club, or PSC, has been serving Parkrose youth since the mid-1970s. Open to kids from age five through eighth grade students, PSC provides a recreational league for any child who wants to play soccer. The 2003 fall league has begun and teams are full, but watch for sign-ups next May. Coach Coordinator Julie Johnson reports that registration fees are reasonable and no child will be turned away due to financial need. Our goal is to provide a fun, safe soccer experience for every kid who wants to play, she says. PSC relies on fundraisers and direct donations to supplement their expenses. PSC also hosts special soccer camps in the summer. They contract with UK International, which brings coaches from England to offer intensified training for youth soccer players. Last summer, 69 kids participated. Watch the Mid-county MEMO for announcements of their summer soccer camps, which will be held in June 2004. Damian Califf the Parkrose High School boys varsity soccer coach is also the coordinator for what is called the Munchkin League of the PSC. These five year-olds can be found on Saturday mornings at Knott Park. Johnson explains that this link between young soccer players and the high school teams is part of PSCs objective. Providing a steady flow of talent to the older age teams as well as a seamless transition for players who seek to move on to competitive soccer at the high school level.
