Memo Letters...

The Mid-county MEMO is your newspaper. We want to hear from you. Discuss an important issue or address a concern you want to call to the community’s attention. We prefer e-mailed letters to the editor sent to Darlene Vinson, at editor@midcountymemo.com. Please put ‘letter to the editor’ in the subject line. You may also mail your letter to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave., Portland, OR 97230 or fax it to 503-249-7672. Our deadline for the November issue is Wednesday, October 15.

PBA says No to PUD
To the editor,

The Parkrose Business Association (PBA) Board of Directors unanimously voted to oppose the proposal to form a people’s utility district (PUD) in Multnomah County.

Following are some of the reasons PBA believes the PUD initiative is poor public policy:

• Portland General Electric and PacifiCorp presently serve the Parkrose area. PBA businesses have been well served by those two companies and see no benefit from the significant changes that have been proposed.

• The condemnation of PGE and PacifiCorp assets would be draconian, expensive and anti-business.

• There is no assurance of lower power rates or improved reliability.

• The formation of a PUD would shift the power provider from a tax paying entity to a non-tax paying entity therein shifting more tax burden to households and businesses.

• Reliable and dependable power is critical to businesses and households. Formation of a PUD would not have the resources to negotiate and purchase power at a competitive price.

• Both PGE and PacifiCorp have been good neighbors in the Portland metropolitan community. They have been generous with their contributions to many worthwhile projects. In all likelihood this would disappear with the creation of a PUD.

We urge you to join us in voting NO on measures 26-51 and 26-52 in November.

Rossi responds
Dear Editor:

I read Kim Gore’s letter to the editor in the September 2003, issue of the Mid-county Memo. I was thoroughly embarrassed by the possibility the Parkrose Lions may have been left off our flyer for the Barn Bash.

First and foremost, we thank the Parkrose Lions for their help in preparing the chicken for our guests. Their help is invaluable and they definitely work hard. Thanks!

After reading the letter, I immediately went back and reviewed copies of the material that I know went out (posters, flyers an tickets). The Lions were always mentioned ABOVE the sponsors as being responsible for the preparation of the barbecue chicken.

The “Sponsor” section on the flyer, poster and tickets is a paid spot received with the sponsorship package. We believe the Lions are an important part of our event. I also believe sponsorships and the great efforts of the Parkrose Lions are different.

On a football roster, you wouldn’t list a quarterback as a defensive end. Both are key to the successful outcome of the game, but are different players.

Thanks again to the Parkrose Lions, our sponsors and volunteers.

See you at next year’s Barn Bash!

Regards,
Nick Rossi, 503-652-9801
