Old time group discusses new business
According to its newsletter, the Gateway Area Business Association is the city’s “oldest continuously run business organization.” Members within the Gateway business district support one another at monthly meetings. The next meeting is set for noon on Thursday, March 9 at Midland Library, 805 S.E. 122nd Ave.

PHS parent involvement meeting set
The members of the Parkrose High Bronco Boosters know that parental involvement is key to the success of students. A special meeting is planned for Tuesday, March 14 to discuss ways to get more parents involved and to brainstorm fundraising ideas. They need your help. If you are the parent of a PHS student, show your child that school is important to you and that you are willing to become involved to insure his or her success.

The meeting will be in the library at PHS, 12003 N.E. Shaver St., beginning at 7 p.m.

Open house to discuss stormwater management
The City of Portland, Multnomah County and the Port of Portland are required by the federal Clean Water Act to develop new stormwater management plans. The three jurisdictions will hold an open house on their draft plans Tuesday, March 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church, 1137 S.E. 20th Ave.

The public can submit comments on the draft plans through March 21, 2006. For more information, call 503-944-7994 or e-mail besstormwater@bes.ci.portland.or.us. More information is available online at www.portlandonline.com/bes.

Help design new skatepark
Glenhaven Park, next door to Madison High School, will be home of one of the first new skateparks built in Portland under a plan developed by the Skatepark Leadership Advisory Team. A Parks levy, passed in 2002 by Portland voters, provides funding for the facility.

“The Roseway Neighborhood Association is excited to see this great project moving ahead,” said RNA board member Lauren Schmitt. Both Roseway and neighboring Madison South Neighborhoods are joining Portland Parks & Recreation in hosting a public meeting on the new skatepark. This public meeting will be an opportunity for the neighbors, future skatepark users and others to review the details of the preliminary design. Following the presentation on the early design, there will be discussion on desired skatepark features, site amenities and how to best integrate this facility into Glenhaven Park.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 15, in the Madison High School Cafeteria, 2735 N.E. 82nd Ave., from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Enjoy a deli luncheon while networking
The Parkrose Business Association will meet at the Rodeway Inn, 9727 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on Thursday, March 16 at 11:30 a.m. This is a departure from the usual meeting place and is a one-time only event to showcase Harry’s Fresh Deli. Harry’s will cater the luncheon and Scott Sadler will give members the dish on the deli during the member moment.

The guest speaker will be Caryn Condon, regional manager of Consulting Alliance, Inc. She specializes in sales, managing for profit and leadership.

Citizen group seeks funding for parks
The Citywide Parks Team partnership brings together many special focus groups and individuals, such as Neighborhood Association and district/coalition parks committees, “Friends of...” organizations, and businesses. It’s also a place for people who don’t otherwise participate in parks organizational discussions -sports facility users, social and cultural service providers sharing building space, etc. - to add their voices. The partnership provides opportunities for liaison with the Parks Bureau, Parks Board, Portland Parks Foundation and other stakeholders. It’s citizen-initiated, citizen-led, citizen-owned and intended for all Portland residents who care about getting things done in and for parks in Portland.

A meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 16. Portland Parks & Recreation staff will make a short presentation. The balance of the meeting will be devoted to a group brainstorming session on ways for the park bureau to increase its revenues with an emphasis on operations and maintenance funds.

Ongoing meetings are on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Rose Room on the third floor of City Hall, 1221 S.W. 4th Ave. The public is encouraged to attend.

FUNDRAISERS
Boosters turn your empties into cash
Gather up the empty returnable beverage cans and bottles in your garage and run them down to Parkrose Middle School, 11800 N.E. Shaver St., on Saturday, March 3, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Parkrose High School Bronco Booster Club uses the money it raises to support students and activities at the high school.

Members collect empties the first Saturday of each month, including Saturday, April 1.

Hoedown, auction raise scholarship money
It’s going to be a country hoedown this year, and you’re invited to “Kick Up Your Heels” at the Mt. Hood Community College Foundation auction and dinner.

Dance to country band “Oh Brother” and bid in the silent auction for items such as fine art, an instant wine cellar, exquisite jewelry and other quality items. The evening will also include a live auction that will feature trips to exotic places, golf excursions and even a pie-a-month for a year.

At the auction the MHCC Foundation will also be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a 2006 Pontiac Solstice. This is the third year the college has held the car raffle and the first year to be offering the sporty Solstice. The car will be available for viewing the night of the auction, and raffle tickets will sell for $20 each.

The “Kick Up Your Heels” hoedown includes a country barbecue and lots of good old-fashioned fun. So join the party Saturday, April 1, beginning at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m., at the Oregon Convention Center. Reservations are $75 per person.

The Foundation is still accepting items to offer for bid and sponsorships. To donate, make a reservation, or for more information, call the MHCC Foundation at 503-491-7206. Proceeds from the auction go toward scholarships and teaching enhancements to benefit MHCC students.

People requiring accommodations due to a disability should contact the MHCC Disability Services Office at 503-491-6923 or 503-491-7670 (TDD).
