SENIOR RESOURCES
Russia and Multnomah Falls
Monday, March 8 at 1 p.m., Sounding Board for Widows and Widowers will meet at Central Lutheran Church, 1820 N.E. 21st Ave. (one block north of Broadway). Bob and Doris Muir will present slides from a recent trip to Russia. Guests are welcome. For information, call Helen Long at 503-774-1717.

On Monday, March 22 at 1 p.m. the group will meet at The Rose Center, 211 N.E. 18th Avenue at Sandy Boulevard at 11 a.m. for a trip up the Columbia Gorge to Multnomah Falls for lunch. Retirees to gather
The regular meeting of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 1535 will be on Tuesday, March 9 at the Oregon Baptist Retirement Hall recreation hall, 1825 N.E. 108th Ave. There will be a representative of Friends of Trees to speak. 55 Alive class to begin
An American Association of Retired Persons, or AARP, 55 Alive Safe Driving Course will be held at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. on Thursday, April 15 and Friday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The class is an informative, refresher course on the rules of driving. Some people may receive a discount on their insurance after completing the class.

The class costs $10, payable to the instructor the first day of class. Checks or money orders should be made payable to AARP. No cash is accepted.

Space is limited to 32 people. Pre-registration is required by calling 503-823-3450.

Bring magic into someone’s life...get involved as a volunteer
Elders in Action is the leading advocacy group for the seniors in the Portland area. Find out more below about how your skills will ensure seniors continue to be a vibrant part in their communities.

Volunteers 60 years or older are needed to learn how to evaluate local businesses for their “Elder Friendliness” and advise managers on how to better serve the older customer. This opportunity is perfect for someone who likes to shop, explore new businesses, and make their own schedule. Some of the things you will be trained to look for include: Are price tags visible? Is the telephone system easy to use? Is customer service available when needed?

If you are 60 or older and would like to volunteer from the convenience of your home, become a Web Evaluator. Help improve web access for older adults, accept assignments as your schedule allows. Some of the things you will be trained to look for: Are fonts large enough? Is navigation easy to use? Is there a contact number? A training session will be held Wednesday, March 31 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the New PCC SE Center, 2305 S.E. 82nd Ave., Room 119

The Ombudsman services program trains volunteers to become Ombudsman and Community Educators and provide our services and programs in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties.

Ombudsman provide individual problem-solving assistance, advocacy, and emotional support to seniors and persons with disabilities in the areas of: housing, health care, and elder crime and abuse.

Sign up for Ombudsman training to be held March 29 through April 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Elders in Action Office, 501 S.W. Washington.

Community Educators help seniors avoid becoming victims of Scams, Fraud and other Bad Stuff. ID Theft, Predatory Lending, Medicare Fraud, Construction Fraud, and Breast Health Awareness are areas addressed, preparing you to effectively reach the community. Community Educator training is scheduled for March 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., March 30 from 12:45 to 3:30 p.m. and April 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Volunteers receive 32 hours of training and make a commitment of 8 to10 hours per month.

Texas Hold’em Tournament rescheduled
Calling all Poker players. The 205 Earlyriser Kiwanis have rescheduled their Texas Hold’em Tournament Fundraiser to Friday, March 5. The tournament will be held at East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106 Ave, from 6 to 9 p.m. The fundraiser will benefit the Playground Fund at the community center and the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp. Trophies and gift certificates will be presented to the top three finishers. The $20 registration fee includes $20 in chips. Photographic exhibit at The Grotto
John McAnulty is an award-winning photographer specializing in fine-art landscape, portrait and floral photography. A selection of his photographs will be on display in the Visitor Complex at The Grotto until Sunday, April 11. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the week.

Meet the artist at a reception on Saturday, March 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. During the reception visitors will also have an opportunity each hour to view John’s critically acclaimed multi-media slide presentation that is titled “Gaia’s Gifts”.

Woolf insists that Mrs. Dalloway locates the enormous in the mundane; that a seemingly trivial life reflects the incisive and idiotic simultaneously.
