Business groups to sponsor mayoral debate
The new Portland Community College Southeast Center at Southeast 82nd Avenue and Division Street will be the venue for a debate between Portland mayoral candidates Jim Francesconi and Tom Potter on Tuesday, March 23 at 12 noon.

The East Portland Chamber of Commerce and the 82nd Avenue Business Association sponsor the event. The focus will be on taxes, regulations and other city policies that impact the diverse business community on Portland’s eastside, especially small businesses.

This will be one of the first debates between the two candidates in which eastside business people will have a chance to raise issues important to them.

Potter is a former Portland police chief and Francesconi is a member of the Portland City Council.

Lunch is optional and will be available at the college. For more details, check the chamber’s website www.EastPortlandChamber.com

Programs help women change their lives
The Mt. Hood Community College, or MHCC, Transitions and Transiciones programs have helped numerous women change their lives for the better and are now recruiting to assist others. The programs help women to transition to college and provide them with the skills to become financially secure.

“Our programs are a very effective bridge for single parents and homemakers to plan a career and prepare for college,” said program coordinator Cynthia Dettman. “This program truly changes lives, helping women move from poverty to long-term economic security and independence.”

Transitions is a one-term program and applicants must apply for financial aid, take the college placement test, attend an informational session and attend an individual interview. An information session will be March 8, from 10 a.m. to noon in the board room on the Gresham campus. The program includes a very low-cost, 7-credit set of three courses as well as mentoring services.

Transiciones is a two-term program that provides similar services, with classes taught in Spanish. The program serves Latina women with moderate English skills who have an interest in transitioning to college coursework. Applicants must take a placement test and be proficient enough to be placed in ENL 94. The classes are available on Tuesday afternoons from 4 to 7 p.m. and run through December 2004.

Transiciones informational sessions will be held Thursday, March 11 from 5 to 6 p.m. All meetings will be held in the Bob Scott Room in the MHCC Library.

For more information about the Transitions program, contact Cynthia Dettman at 503-491-7687. For more information about the Transiciones program, contact Elizabeth Perry at 503-491-6972.

People requiring accommodations due to a disability should contact the MHCC Disability Services Office at 503-491-6923 or 503-491-7670 (TDD).

Neighborhood carnival
In recognition of the state proclaimed back to school week, Russell Academy will host their 2nd annual Neighbor Night Carnival.

All community members are welcome to join in for a night of fun, food and games. What a great way to spend an evening and help the school. All proceeds go towards funding the after school reading program and purchasing new teaching materials.

If you are not available to participate on carnival night, there are other ways you can show your support: Sponsor a carnival booth with a $30 donation. Donate a product or service for the silent auction to be held that evening.

All sponsors will be recognized that evening by having their business or organization name posted at the sponsored booth or table.

The BIG night is Friday April 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Russell Academy 2700 N.E. 127th Ave.

Your participation will make this fundraising event a success for both the community and the students at Russell Academy.

Please call Deanne Paltridge at 503-261-0633 if you would like to make donation.
