Each Wednesday Morning at 7:30, a chamber member hosts a Good Morning East Portland Networking opportunity somewhere within east Portland. Once a month, the Chamber meets for a special breakfast seminar. These monthly seminars feature speakers who offer practical, timely information and ideas specifically for small businesses...from low cost advertising to improving your sales skills. Supporting the community Columbia View Kiwanis invites all interested parties to join them for lunch any Wednesday from noon to 1 pm, at The Refectory, Northeast 122nd Avenue and Halsey Street. This club supports many community activities, including SnowCAP, Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for Disabled Children and Adults, and DayBreak Homeless Family Shelter. Also, all Kiwanis clubs in Oregon and Southwest Washington are selling raffle tickets at $2 each for a beautiful blue 1965 Mustang. The drawing will be held on September 6 at the State Fair. Winner need not be present. All proceeds benefit the Kiwanis Doernbecher Childrens Cancer Program at Oregon Health Sciences University. Business leaders to meet The Gateway Area Business Association, or GABA, describe themselves as the voice for the Gateway business community. They will hold their monthly general membership meeting on Thursday, July 8 from 11:40 a.m. to 1 p.m. at JJ North Grand Buffet, 10520 N.E. Halsey St. Members plus representatives from all area businesses are encouraged to attend. Group awards scholarships The Parkrose Business Association, or PBA, recently hosted the Rose Festival Cruise-in that helps to generate funds for college scholarships for deserving Parkrose High School graduates. This year the PBA was able to honor two students with $1000 scholarships. The recipients were Nicole Zoeller who plans to attend Pepperdine University in the fall and Daniel Grierson who is heading for George Fox University. The next regular monthly meeting of the PBA will be on Thursday, July 15 at Steamers Restaurant, 8303 N.E. Sandy Blvd. To get involved in this active organization, join them from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a buffet luncheon. The cost is $10, which includes dessert and gratuity. Skidmore St. Learn the special lessons relating to the love Nemos dad had for the wayward little fish. This weeklong event is set for Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Explore Bible themes that relate to the adventures of Nemo as he tries to find his way home. Along with the movie and Bible lessons, participants will have fun with outdoor games, excellent crafts, puppet shows, snacks and more. Blessing of the animals The Grotto will observe its 21st annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, July 18 at 2 p.m. outdoors in the sanctuarys central plaza. Father Jack Topper, OSM, Executive Director of The Grotto, will preside over the blessing. The Grotto, an internationally renowned Catholic sanctuary, is located on Northeast Sandy Boulevard at Northeast 85th Avenue. The Blessing of the Animals offers individuals with pets an opportunity to reflect upon the positive impact animals have on our emotional and physical well-being. This annual event attracts a wide variety of animals and their human friends. St. Annes celebration People of all faiths are invited to refresh the soul and spirit at the annual celebration of the Feast of St. Anne at The Grotto. This years celebration of the liturgy and reflection will be held on Monday evening, July 26, at 7:30 p.m., outside on the plaza at The Grotto, located on Northeast Sandy Boulevard at 85th Avenue. The theme for this years reflection is: Joachim and Anne at the Golden Gate. Rev. Jon Buffington will preside at the celebration. Father Buffington is a priest of the Chaldean Rite. He is a trained Church historian specializing in the writings of the early Church Fathers and has been Chaplain at Providence Hospital for the past 13 years. SENIOR RESOURCES Free hearing aid clinic A free hearing aid clinic will be offered Tuesday, July 13 from noon to 1 p.m. at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. John Morosco, a hearing instrument specialist with Cascade Hearing and Audiology Centers, and Sherry Dickie, Cascades audiologist, will repair and clean hearing aids, check batteries, administer hearing tests, and offer aural rehabilitation, including strategies for improving communication. Great lunch, great company The Sounding Board of Widows and Widowers plan an afternoon of socializing and sharing a meal on Monday, July 26. Tender care for toes A Foot Care Clinic will soothe Mid-County feet at the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. The YWCA sponsors the clinic during which professional nurses will soak participants feet and clip their toenails. The initial visit is $22, with future appointments costing $20. Clinics are scheduled on Thursdays, July 8, 22 and 29. Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, call Abby Kennedy at 503-988-6073. FUNDRAISERS Wanted: cans and bottles The Parkrose Bronco Boosters will be on hand at Parkrose Middle School, 11800 N.E. Shaver St. the first Saturday of the month to take those pesky refundable bottles and cans off your hands. Even over the long holiday weekend, you will find volunteers on hand on Saturday, July 3 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. If you miss that opportunity, look for them again on Saturday, August 7. Rain or shine. Funds raised benefit Parkrose High students. Music for a good cause Eastminster Presbyterian Church will hold the second of two Summer Outdoor Concerts to benefit SnowCAP Community Charities on Sunday, July 18 at 3 p.m. The Portland Metro Concert Band will entertain at a concert on the church lawn at 12505 N.E. Halsey St. The concert is free, but the church asks for donations to support Snow-CAP of $5 per person and or 3 cans of food, three items of childrens clothing, soap, personal hygiene products or paper products. The first concert featuring the East County Community Orchestra provided Snow-CAP with donated items and cash valued at $672.30. Eastminster would like to meet or beat that amount at the second concert. Some folding chairs will be available, but please bring a lawn chair if you have one. Halsey St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday July, 24. Proceeds will help fund the troops trip to Victoria, British Columbia in August.
