MEMO Calendar Items...

The Mid-county Memo is a newspaper dedicated to serving the community. One of the best ways to do this is by informing Memo readers of upcoming events of interest and meetings of groups they might like to join. Help connect our community! If you are part of a group that you enjoy, let your neighbors know about it. Publicize your special event or fundraiser here in the Mid-county Memo Calendar section.

Submissions for each month are due by the 15th of the previous issue. Please have Calendar submissions for July in by Monday, June 15. We prefer e-mailed submissions sent to Dawn Widler, Department Editor at editor@midcountymemo.com. You may also mail complete information to 4052 N.E. 22nd Ave., Portland, OR, 97212-1503, phone 503-287-8094 or fax 503-249-7672.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Spring clean or spring shop
Do you have some “gently used” items taking up space around your house? Or maybe you are still looking for that perfect decoration to put the finishing touch in your home. Whether you would like to clear some space in your home or get some inexpensive new items, you can help Shaver Elementary School at the same time. The Shaver Parent Faculty Association (SPFA) is holding a Craft Supplies Bazaar/Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday July 26, Saturday July 27, and Sunday July 28 at Shaver Elementary, 3701 N.E. 131 Place. SPFA has received over $45,000 worth of merchandise from local vendors, as well as many items from members of the community, so this promises to be a huge sale.

Come visit this special Craft Supplies Bazaar/Rummage Sale and browse the selection. Several Portland area vendors have donated new items in support of this fund raising event. Some of these items include new home decor, silk flowers, beautiful wired ribbon, topiaries, toys, jewelry, handbags, all types and kinds of craft supplies and more, all at garage sale prices.

Since the Argay neighborhood is not having its annual area garage sale this year, the SPFA is asking that neighborhood residents consider donating their items to SPFA for this event. There are some items the SPFA is not accepting, including large appliances, beds, couches or other large furniture items. No unwearable clothing, broken or dangerous children’s toys or furniture, used encyclopedias or old textbooks. Anything else in reasonably good condition is welcomed. If you have items to donate, please drop them off at Shaver Elementary School on Sunday, July 14 or Sunday, July 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. only. If you don’t have items to donate, but would still like to support our kids, you can donate time. Volunteers are needed: if you would like to help at this event, please contact SPFA at 503-408-2850.

Proceeds from this fundraising activity will help buy new books for the school’s library and help support other activities. Help our kids by donating items, time, or by getting an inexpensive new knick-knack. For more information, please call SPFA President-elect Christy Hillman at 503-408-7816 or email chillman@teleport.com.

Take control of your utilities
Save energy and money this month with the help of the Community Energy Project. Learn how to take control of your water and sewer bills. This free workshop provides information on how to detect and repair leaks, water conservation ideas both in and around your home, plus details on Portland’s incredible water system. Each Portland household receives an instructional workbook and a free kit of materials worth $25. This workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, in the East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. For more information or to register, please call 503-284-6827.

Cruise down to the show
Les Schwab Tires is hosting the 9th Annual Cadillac-La Salle Club Open Event. This car show will be held rain or shine and includes lots of cool cars and great prizes. Over 75 trophies will be awarded and dash plaques will be given for the first 175 entries. The participants will judge the contest and a DJ will be on hand providing music. This great event also includes hundreds of dollars in raffle prizes. The Cadillac-La Salle Club Open Event will be held at Les Schwab Tires, 2410 S.E. 122nd Ave. on Sunday, July 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call Cadillac-La Salle Club President Butch at 503-761-2609.

Get rid of your hazardous waste
Metro will be hosting several local hazardous waste roundups in Portland. These events are smaller than the large-scale collection events that Metro has held in past years. These events are also more frequent and community-friendly. There is one coming to our area on Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bring your hazardous waste to the Portland Fire Training Center, 4800 N.E. 122nd Ave.

For more information, please visit www.metro-region.org or call the Metro Recycling Information Center at 503-234-3000.

Enjoy a picnic in the park
The Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors will celebrate National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, Aug. 6, in Knott Park at the West end of the park. Geri Henry, long time Parkrose Heights resident, is arranging for a live musical group that recently performed at Parkrose High School. Night Out Against crime also includes members from the police and fire departments. Details are still being worked out but plan to come and bring your lawn chairs, picnic basket, and join in for a wonderful evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, please call Carol Williams at 503-255-9596.

Nibble off a bit of fun

Taqueria Ochoa will fire up the grill with delectable Mexican cuisine. Ice cream treats and hot dogs will also be available. Live entertainment will be on the sound stage from noon to 8 p.m., including

Native American drumming, a country-rock band, mariachi music with a Latin band, and much more.
