Neighborhood associations stay active
Neighborhood associations work with members and the powers that be to create safe, healthy communities.

To be effective, they need you to be involved. If you do not know which neighborhood association serves you, contact the East Portland Neighborhood Office, 735 S.E. 106th Ave., at 503-823-4550 or epno@epno.org.

There will be a general meeting of the Hazelwood Neighborhood Association on Monday, Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the East Portland Neighborhood Office, 735 S.E. 106th Ave.

The Wilkes Community Group next general meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Teamsters Complex, Joe Edgar Hall, 1850 N.E. 162nd Ave.

Kerry Brown of WCG says, “The city, county, port of Portland and any number of organizations and bureaus are asking for more citizen participation, so 2006 should be a productive year for citizen input. Valuable suggestions and direction are lost when the public is not involved from the beginning of a project. Much of the time, public process merely allows citizens to attend scheduled meetings after decisions have been made and a ‘show and tell’ wraps up studies or projects.”

With that in mind, Brown says the Wilkes Community is looking for someone to represent the community as a Citizen Noise Advisory Committee representative. The committee advises port staff on community noise studies, serves as a resource for outreach efforts, and provides a forum for citizens to address concerns about air traffic above neighborhoods. Please contact Rachel Wray of the Port of Portland Noise Management Office at rachel.wray@portofportland.com to sign on.

WCG leaders extend a big thanks to all the volunteers who worked at the annual Wilkes Fall Clean-up in November. Four containers provided by the city of Portland were filled to capacity with yard debris and unwanted household items.

The Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors board will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 17 followed by a general membership meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Both meetings are at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St and begin at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17 the Parkrose Neighborhood Association will meet at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore beginning at 7 p.m.

Western States Chiropractic College, 2900 N.E. 132nd Ave. is the site of the Thursday, Jan. 19 Russell Neighborhood Association general meeting. It starts at 7 p.m.

The Glenfair Neighborhood Association will meet on Thursday, Jan. 26 in the Glenfair Elementary School faculty lounge, 15300 N.E. Glisan St.

The general membership of the Woodland Park Neighborhood Association will meet at the East Portland Neighborhood Office, 735 S.E. 106th Ave. on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

A special meeting of all Parkrose School District neighborhoods is set for Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in the Parkrose High School Community Center Library, 12003 N.E. Shaver St. Parkrose School District Superintendent Michael Taylor will host.

Community asked to provide input on budget
A Portland Parks & Recreation community budget meeting is set from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11 in the Benson High School Cafeteria, 546 N.E. 12th Ave.

This meeting is designed to give citizens an opportunity to review and comment on the Portland Parks & Recreation draft requested budget for 2006-07.

It will summarize what the bureau heard from citizens at its Dec. 3 budget workshop, including ideas involving water and energy conservation, recycling, concessions and contracting out for certain parks services.

This will also be the opportunity to learn how community input was used in formulating budget, centering on key benefits provided by our parks and recreation system.

All city bureaus must submit their budget requests by Feb. 6, with the City Council giving its final approval in June.

Business taxes to be topic at monthly meeting
Members of the Gateway Area Business Association will hear from business tax experts at the meeting on Thursday, Jan. 12 at J J North’s Grand Buffet, 10520 N.E. Halsey St. Be there at 11:45 a.m. to take advantage of this opportunity.

Learn to recycle construction materials
The city of Portland Bureau of Development Services will kick off its monthly Lunch and Learn Brown Bag workshop series for the New Year with a discussion of how to recycle construction and demolition materials.

Attendees will learn why they should recycle these materials, what materials can be recycled, what happens to those materials, how to effectively reuse materials and will be made aware of recycling resources and incentives.

Back a lunch and drop in on this free meeting. It will begin at noon on Friday, Jan. 13 at 1900 S.W. 4th Ave. in Room 2500-A.
