There is a new program at Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization, 10301 N.E. Glisan St., funded through Legacy Community Health Fund on behalf of the Legacy Health System. This program is called the Russian-Speaking Kindergarten Enrollment program. The program provides home visiting kindergarten skills to Russian-speaking children ages 3-5 years that primarily live in the Centennial School District with some children from David Douglas, Parkrose and Reynolds school districts as well. The program is able to provide services to 25 children for a 3-year period with funding available for home visiting services through June 2008. The goal of the program is to prepare Russian-speaking children for kindergarten. A Russian-speaking Parents as Teachers certified parent educator teaches the children kindergarten skills and the parent’s child development, age-specific skills. The program provides services to 3-5 year old children who are not in Head Start or another pre-school type program. Parent group meetings are provided quarterly where parents can meet each other and share experiences. If you are interested in this program please call parent educator Svetlana Sivacheva or program manager Danita Huynh at 503-235-9396.

Superintendent reaches out to neighborhoods
Michael Taylor, the superintendent of the Parkrose School District, looks to find ways that the district can work with the community to make area-wide improvements.

He has invited neighborhood associations, community leaders, representatives from the Portland Police Bureau East Precinct, his district building principals, members of the board of education and members of the community to an open meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in the library of the Parkrose High School Community Center, 12003 N.E. Shaver St.

Taylor plans to provide a brief summary for each of the district schools and introduce school staff to facilitate interaction with the community. He will solicit input from attendees and will seek to find ways to solve problems and work together to improve the community at large.

Mark your calendar now to become part of this broad-based effort. If you need more information, contact the district office at 503-408-2100.
