Historical society hosts events
The David Douglas Historical Society invites all Mid-County neighbors to its Jan. 18 meeting at 1:30 p.m. Former David Douglas School District teacher Lee Johnson and his wife Mary Lou will describe their recent trip to Curacao. Curacao is an island of the Netherlands Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea off the northwest coast of Venezuela.

At the Feb. 15 meeting, also at 1:30 p.m., former David Douglas High School teachers George and Carol Pavlakovich lead a pictorial discussion of their recent experiences in the Middle East with the “Toys for Peace” program.

Open house and tours are also held the first and third Wednesday of the month from 10 am to noon. Come and see the “one room schoolhouse,” old photos and educational artifacts showing the people and events that shaped the David Douglas School District. The David Douglas Historical Society is located at 1400 S.E. 135th Ave., just south of David Douglas High School in the Children’s Service Center building. For further details please contact Society Publicist Robert Edwards at 503-252-5939.

Free seminars on Oriental Medicine offered in January
The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is sponsoring a series of free Saturday seminars for the public beginning Jan. 22 on how to stay healthy during cold and flu season by using traditional Chinese medicine.

These medical techniques, developed over centuries in China, can be helpful in easing symptoms of cold, flu and cough.

Each Saturday seminar begins at 10 a.m. on the OCOM campus at 10525 S.E. Cherry Blossom Drive and will last for two hours.

The seminar on Jan. 22 will focus on acupuncture and Chinese medicinal herbs. A licensed acupuncturist will discuss how these modalities can help you get well and stay healthy throughout the winter. OCOM will provide the opportunity to sample an acupuncture treatment and to taste herbal teas.

At the seminar on Jan. 29, the public will be introduced to the benefits of Oriental massage and qigong (pronounced chee-gong) meditative exercise. Both massage and qigong can help to reduce stress, ease aches and pains, and increase flexibility. Attendees will participate in a qigong demonstration and learn a few basic moves.

The seminars are free, but space is limited. To reserve your place, call 503-253-3443, ext. 550.
