Call for applications: 18th Annual BEST Awards
Heads up to Portland-area green businesses: the application period for the 18th annual BEST Awards is now open. The Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow Business Center and the city of Portland invite Portland's most sustainable organizations to compete against the best in the metro area for the prestigious, juried BEST Awards.

The BEST Awards accepts applications in four separate categories: BEST practices for sustainability (broken down by very small, small, medium and large organizations), sustainable products or services, green building and sustainable food systems.

The winners will be announced at the BEST Awards Breakfast, a gala event on Tuesday, April 20. The jury will honor up to 10 businesses or organizations that exemplify ambitious and creative solutions for sustainable operations, building projects or products while promoting social, economic and environmental equity for the Portland community.

The application period closes at 5 p.m. on Feb. 16. Visit www.bestbusinesscenter.org/bestawards for detailed application instructions or call 503-823-6111. Businesses throughout the Portland metropolitan area are encouraged to apply.

The 2010 BEST Awards are presented by the BEST Business Center, a program of the city of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.

Workshop to offer toolbox for home buyers
A home buyer workshop, tailored for first-time home buyers and current home owners looking to take advantage of the new $6,500 tax credit will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Oregon Realty, 215 S.E. 102nd Ave., Suite 300.

The workshop, sponsored by Oregon Realty, HomeStreet Bank and the Home Team Inspection Service will educate buyers on changes in buying a home since the financial meltdown of 2009.

A mortgage consultant will speak about new mortgage loan options including the Federal Housing Administration 203(k) rehab loan that allows home owners to consolidate repairs or updates into one home loan with one low FHA mortgage rate, the extended $8,000 tax credit for first-time buyers and the new $6,500 tax credit for home owners residing in their current home for five of the last eight years.

A home inspection instructor will present a video showing home buyers what defects to be aware of when shopping and will talk about mold issues, pest and dry rot, siding issues and radon gas awareness and will be available for questions.

A realtor will explain what to expect from the current market, address short sales and foreclosures, and break down the home buying process into easy steps explaining what to expect from the beginning to closing.
