Summer in the great outdoors
With these offerings from Metro, you can learn about our region, rediscover the beauty of nature and enjoy some fun activities.

Around the campfire at Oxbow Regional Park
Bring the family to Oxbow Regional Park amphitheater on Friday and Saturday evenings and enjoy stories, nature programs and music. Live musical entertainment is featured on Fridays and stories and the wonders of nature are presented on Saturdays. The amphitheater is located directly across from the campground. The program is free with paid park admission of $4 per vehicle. Please, no pets.

To get to Oxbow, from I-84, take the Troutdale exit 17. Go past the truck stop to the light. Turn right on 257th, Go 3 miles to Division Street. Turn left onto Division. Follow the signs 6.5 miles and turn left. Follow the road to the park.

Discovering ethno botany: Saturday, Aug. 7 from 8 to 9 p.m. Learn how plants have been used for thousands of years for food and medicine with naturalists Natalie Norman and Miriam Burk from Portland Parks and Recreation.

Jen and Wendy’s eclectic tunes: Friday, Aug. 13 from 8 to 9 p.m. The whole family will enjoy Jen and Wendy’s theatrical performance style and vocal harmonies, with trailside songs featuring bears, bugs and the great outdoors.

Birds of prey: Saturday, Aug. 14 from 8 to 9 p.m. Live birds of prey visit the campfire circle from Hawk Haven. Find out cool raptor facts and meet an eagle.

Fiddling in the park with Greg Clarke: Friday, Aug. 20 from 8 to 9 p.m. Enjoy the sounds of banjo, fiddle and mandolin among the trees as Greg Clarke brings his toe-tapping tunes to the campfire.

The amazing nightlife of bats: Saturday, Aug. 21 from 8 to 9 p.m. What is faster than a speeding mosquito, more powerful than bug repellent and able to navigate the night? Bats! Naturalist Kim Wilson shares great bat slides while visitors watch and listen for real live bats.

Campfire songs and sing-along: Friday, Aug. 27 from 8 to 9 p.m. Guitarist Brad Price has a great stage presence and you will love listening to him strum and sing family favorites.

Shadow puppets: Saturday, Aug. 28 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Behind an illuminated screen, colorful shadow puppets come to life in this Appalachian tale from the Oregon Shadow Theatre.

Old-time music with Dave and Will: Friday, Sept. 3 from 8 to 9 p.m. Dave and Will Elliott, father and son, return to Oxbow with great bluegrass tunes. Enjoy old-style brother duets and sing along with some favorites.

Storytelling to the beat of the drum: Saturday, Sept. 4 from 8 to 9 p.m. Gordon Munro returns with his special blend of the ancient arts of drumming and storytelling. You will enjoy folk stories from different cultures around the world.

Powell Butte trail maintenance: Saturday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Help restore the trail system at Powell Butte Nature Park. Bring water, gloves and sturdy shoes. Meet at the parking lot at the top of the hill on Southeast 162nd Avenue off Powell Boulevard. To register, call 503-823-6131.

Go native at Blue Lake: Saturday, Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Metro’s natural gardening experts and their traveling native plant garden will make a special appearance at Blue Lake Regional Park, in Troutdale on Northeast 223rd Avenue between Marine Drive and Sandy Boulevard. Enter to win a compost bin, take home a native plant for your garden and get lots of information about pesticide-free gardening. Visitors also will get to check out Blue Lake’s newly restored “all natural” lawn near the swim beach. This event is free. For more information, call Lisa Heigh at 503-797-1611.

Twilight Tuesday at Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area: Tuesday, Aug. 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This relaxing walk at Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area takes advantage of those long summer days and gives you a chance to unwind after work. Dusk is one of the best times to see wildlife, especially during the summer. It is about the only time you can see most mammals such as beaver, otter, muskrat, raccoon, nutria, deer and mink. Birds also are more active. Discuss the basics of wildlife watching and identification with Metro naturalist James Davis. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair from Metro. All ages are welcome, but children must be able to be quiet, sneaky and patient. Free. Advance registration required; call 503-797-1850 option 4. To get there, take Interstate 5 to Marine Drive west exit 307. Go west on North Marine Drive for 2.2 miles. Turn left at the large brown and white wildlife area sign.

New volunteer orientation at Metro: Wednesday, Aug. 18 from noon to 1 p.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m. Start your Metro volunteer experience off on the right foot. Join Metro staff for new volunteer orientation either during the lunch hour or in the evening at Metro Regional Center, 600 N.E. Grand Ave. Learn about Metro parks and greenspaces, hear about the benefits of volunteering, receive information on volunteer job opportunities in the field and office, complete your volunteer application and enjoy the company of other new volunteers. Bull Run watershed tour: Saturday, Aug. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Portland’s tap water at its source. Learn about the protected resources that provide Portland with uniquely high quality drinking water. $15. Advance registration required. To register, call 503-823-7407. Full moon slough paddle: Monday, Aug. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. Join the Columbia Slough Watershed Council paddling guides for a quiet, moonlit tour of the tree-lined reaches of the upper Columbia Slough. Bring your own canoe or kayak, paddles and personal flotation device. Meet at the boat launch at Northeast Airport Way and 165th Avenue. For more information, call Scott at 503-281-1132. Public safety in your neighborhood
Many of your neighborhood associations will not meet during August having substituted National Night Out on Aug. 3 to host a party instead; regular meetings will begin again soon.

The Parkrose Neighborhood Association will hold a general meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 N.E. Skidmore St.

A board meeting of the Hazelwood Neighborhood Association is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16 at the East Precinct Community Room, 737 S.E. 106th Ave.

Argay Neighborhood Association board members will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday Aug. 17 at Scarborough Flair, Northeast 131st Avenue and Sandy Boulevard.

Tuesday, Aug. 17 is also the date for a Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors board meeting at Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 N.E. Knott St., beginning at 7 p.m. This is an open meeting but is a working session of the board. For more information, please call Carol Williams at 503-255-9596.

Get in touch the East Portland Neighborhood Office, or EPNO, located at 735 S.E. 106th Ave., to identify your local neighborhood association. In the meantime, make note of the following changes in neighborhood assignments by the Portland Police Bureau. Senior Neighborhood Officers have been renamed Neighborhood Response Team Officers. The Neighborhood Response Team Officers are the Bureau’s community outreach specialists, developing community-based efforts to improve safety and quality of life in the neighborhoods they serve. The primary activities of the Neighborhood Response Team Officers are problem solving, education, and crime prevention.

Argay, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights and Woodland Park are served by Officer Tracy Chamberlin - 503-823-4815.

Glenfair, Russell, and Wilkes are served by Officer Stephanie Rabey - 503-823-4515.

Non-conforming upgrades
The August discussion session hosted by City of Portland Bureau of Development Services is entitled “NCU’s and you.” NCU stands for non-conforming upgrades. This monthly Lunch and Learn Brown Bag will focus on required zoning upgrades for commercial/multi-family projects and will include the following:

• What are Non-Conforming Upgrades?
• When are they required?
• How NCUs impact your tenant improvement & alteration projects.
• Learn about required upgrades to landscaping and bike parking.
• How to keep your commercial/multi-family project on track.
• Understand the options for meeting. Zoning upgrade requirements.
• Questions and answers with city planning and zoning staff experts.

This is a free event open to all. Meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13 at 1900 S.W. 4th Ave., Room 2500-A.

Join a new business association
If you work for or own a business between I-205 and Southeast 162nd Avenue and Southeast Division and Harold Streets, and between Southeast 122nd and 162nd Avenues and Market and Division Streets the Midway Business Association is the place for you.

By getting involved in this new organization, you will get to know your business neighbors, be able to participate in cooperative marketing, be in a position to provide service to your community and schools, and attain more clout at City Hall.

There will be a meeting at Pizza Baron, 2604 S.E. 122nd Ave., on Tuesday, Aug. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m.
