Memo Calendar (continued) Networking breakfast Members of East Portland Chamber of Commerce meet each Wednesday morning at 7:30, when a chamber member hosts a Good Morning East Portland Networking opportunity somewhere within east Portland. Once a month, the Chamber meets for a special breakfast seminar. Ten-year plan to end homelessness The Homelessness Working Group in conjunction with the City of Portland Bureau of Housing and Community Development will host a meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at Midland Branch Library, 805 S.E. 122nd Ave. from 7 to 9 p.m. The Homelessness Working Group has spent the last year asking citizens about their concerns and solutions regarding the homelessness issue in Portland. SENIOR RESOURCES Library looking for volunteer computer instructors Are you interested in sharing your knowledge of computers with senior citizens and helping them to learn the basics? Multnomah County Library is looking for volunteer instructors and class assistants, especially individuals age 50 years and older, to teach Cyber Seniors classes. Cyber Seniors classes are offered for free and are intended for seniors with little or no computer experience. The classes are offered at various Multnomah County libraries throughout the metropolitan area. The ideal candidates for these positions are individuals who would like to share their knowledge of computers and the Internet, have an ability to work with seniors, have patience and a sense of humor, and are able to work independently. The library provides training for instructors and class assistants. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of six hours each month. Cyber Seniors classes cover three basic areas: computer basics, how to find information on the Internet, and how to sign up for and use free e-mail. An ongoing series of three classes is offered from October through May. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer instructor or class assistant or in finding out more about Cyber Seniors classes, contact the coordinator at marciaa@multclib.org. Shuck some corn, throw a pie, have a blast Firwood Gardens, a residential care facility located at 819 N.E. 122nd Ave., provides a full range of activities for seniors. Open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. the facility will host these special events this month: Friday, Aug. 6 at 2:30 p.m. Be on hand for an educational seminar about diabetes and your feet. Friday, Aug. 20 is Pioneer Day. Beginning at 10 a.m. participants can be involved in making rag dolls, corn shucking and enjoying a pioneer cookout. There will be a family heritage show-and-tell, as well as a pioneer costume contest. Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. is the Firwood Olympic for Seniors. This will be a day packed with fun, games and contests. Be sure to be on hand for the pie in the face fundraiser for the resident Rainy Day Fund. The senior program at East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Ave. just might be for you. Jointly sponsored by Loaves & Fishes, Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services, and Portland Parks and Recreation, this program offers daily and weekly activities, as well as van trips and special events. In August, get active with Senior Exercise - Thursdays from 9 to 9:45 a.m. or 10 to 10:45 a.m. It is always the right time to increase your fitness level. Build your strength and stamina and help maintain your flexibility. Exercises are done at a moderate pace, seated and standing while moving to your favorite songs. The next session runs from Aug. 12 through Sept. 30. Only $12. CHURCHES The Assumption of Mary The Grotto will hold its annual celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven with a special outdoor twilight Mass, and candlelight rosary procession at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15. The Grottos Father Jack Topper will preside at Mass with liturgy and music that reflect themes from Marys life. At the conclusion of mass the congregation is welcome to participate in the candlelight rosary procession that will process through The Grottos garden pathways. To honor the 150th Anniversary of the Declaration of the Immaculate Conception, The Grotto will host a conference titled Mary and the Ambiguity of Life. Under the auspices of the Friars Servants of Mary, the Marina Commission of North America was formed to assist Servite men, women and the people they serve to recognize Mary as a strong influence in the work of evangelization, while recognizing differences in culture. Elaine Park will speak about Mary and the New Testament. Rev. Joesph Cheah will discuss Mary and the ambiguity of life in the third and first worlds and Rev. Bob Warsey will address The Immaculate Conception: A Jubilee Conception. The conference will take place at the The Grotto, Northeast 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard, on Friday Aug. 13 and Saturday, Aug. 14. Registration for both days is $35. Knott St. beginning Sunday, Aug. 22 through Thursday, Aug. 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Classes will include Bible study, crafts, games and music and are available for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Agatha Christie play weaves a web of intrigue Resurrection Lutheran Church invites the community to a production of Spiders Web by the British mystery writer Agatha Christie. Performances will be held each Friday and Saturday from Aug. 21 through Sept. 3 at the church located at 1700 N.E. 132nd Ave. The Sunday, Aug. 29 performance will be designated a fundraiser to benefit SnowCap Community Charities.
