Memo Pad...

To fully serve the community, the Mid-county Memo offers this section to showcase upcoming special events, celebrations of milestones in our readers’ lives, those seemingly small accomplishments that often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and everyday events that should be shared with friends and neighbors.

Memo Pad submissions for the October issue are due by Friday, Sept. 14. For best results, e-mail Darlene Vinson at editor@midcountymemo.com. Or mail editorial submissions to 3510 N.E. 134th Ave., Portland, OR 97230. To leave a phone message, call 503-287-8904. The fax number is 503-249-7672.

Currently David Douglas Swim Club has 120 swimmers ranging from 7 to 22 years of age and from novice to the national level. The coaching staff consists of four professional coaches with a combined 50 years of experience.

The David Douglas Swim Club emphasizes proper stroke technique, learning to work as a team, healthy lifestyle habits and fun.

OCOM becomes tobacco free
The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is the first post-secondary institution in the state to implement a 100 percent tobacco-free policy. The declaration is part of the American Lung Association of Oregon’s Tobacco-Free College Initiative that is urging all campuses throughout Oregon to follow suit.

Tobacco-free policies are extremely important as the college age is a critical time to prevent youth initiation of tobacco use, and the policies are proven to work. In fact, the Center for Disease Control strongly recommends all campuses establish restrictive tobacco polices because such policies have demonstrated significant results.

OCOM has eliminated the use of smokeless tobacco, not just cigarettes, on campus as well. This is viewed as crucial now because tobacco companies are increasing their marketing of smokeless tobacco products as a way of dealing with smoking prohibitions.

Pair of Mid-county businesses step up
When the folks at the Boeing Company’s east Portland operation heard the food pantry was running low at SnowCap Community Charities, they jumped in to help.

The result was a $750 contribution earmarked for feeding children during the summer months through Boeing Portland’s Community Outreach Executive Board.

“Boeing has been a consistent supporter of our program to assist the needy, and this contribution is especially timely,” said JudyAlley, SnowCap executive director. “We have a constant demand for food and donations, and available resources have been uniquely diminished this summer. We are committed to supporting families, especially those with children. The Boeing support will be used to continue to make sure that children are fed,” she said.

On the heels of that donation came word of a significant donation of food box items from Portland’s Boyd Coffee Company.

“This is just phenomenal,” Alley said. “It came as a complete surprise and helped buoy the spirit of our food pantry volunteers.” The donation included 17 pallets of soups, syrups and coffees. “We have daily requests for a variety of social services, and there is a continual need for food boxes for families. Donations of food items have lessened this summer, and that’s what makes the Boyd Coffee donation so important,” Alley said.

SnowCap distributes food boxes to more than 750 families every month through its pantry and provides food for more than 1,500 families through related programs.

The Boyd and Boeing donations are among the summer highlights in SnowCap’s 40-4-40 campaign to draw attention to the organization’s 40th anniversary.

“We are asking for 40 of something that SnowCap can use to help low-income families,” Alley said. “That might be $40, 40 hours of volunteer time, 40 cans of food, 40 of almost anything that can help members of our community who are in need.”

Riverview Community Bank and Gresham Ford have signed on as sponsors of the 40-4-40 project.

The campaign will culminate at SnowCap’s 40th anniversary celebration on Sunday, Oct. 7 at Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church from 3 to 5 p.m. The public is invited, and reservations are required.

Information on the 40-4-40 project is available by contacting 503-674-8785 or judy@snowcap.org.

SnowCap is a nonprofit, faith-based volunteer organization that provides food, clothing, seasonal energy assistance, English language instruction and other advocacy services for low-income families and individuals in east Multnomah County.

School district provides quality financials
The David Douglas School District received a national award for financial reporting from the Association of School Business Officials International. The award covers the 2006-07 fiscal year.

The Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award is given each year by ASBO International, located in Virginia, to recognize public school districts that have “provided a high-quality Comprehensive Annual Financial Report” for the fiscal year.

The award, the highest recognition for school financial operations, was designed by ASBO International to recognize districts that have met or exceeded financial reporting standards.

Those standards include validating the credibility of the district’s operations, demonstrating the integrity and technical competence of the district’s business staff, strengthening the district’s bond issuance statements and providing professional recognition.

For additional information about ASBO International and its award program, contact Michelle Williams at 703-708-7067. For additional information about the David Douglas School District CAFR or its business operations, contact Dan McCue, communications specialist with the district, at 503-261-8229.
