Middle Eastern festival showcases cuisine and culture

MARIANNA O’BRIEN
SPECIAL TO THE MEMO

Sarah Spathas, left, and Cynthia Plank enjoy falafel at last year’s St. George Festival & Middle Eastern Bazaar. These sandwiches are a tasty combination of chickpeas, garlic and spices served in a pita with tomato, cucumber and a tangy yogurt sauce.
Shirley Larson, left, and Bee Hartung describe St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church as their neighbor. It was only natural then to find them sampling homemade sweet treats at the celebration last year. A volunteer counts out their change.

The popular and well attended St. George Festival & Middle Eastern Bazaar takes place Sunday, Sept. 17, from noon until 7 p.m. at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, 2101 N.E. 162nd Ave.

St. George parish members started the event in 1972 to honor and celebrate their community’s unique Middle Eastern heritage — share fun, food and excitement with neighbors while raising money for church projects — a good bargain for all.

The bazaar will be held in outdoor tents and indoor concessions, so the fun will go on rain or shine. Outdoors, the succulent smell of roasting meats and spicy falafel will mix with the aroma of Arabic coffee. Indoors, various kinds of exotic merchandise will be offered for sale including sweets of many kinds plus traditional meat and spinach pies. There is also a silent auction, folk dancing and other musical entertainment.

For those interested in this ancient Middle Eastern branch of Christianity, there will be church tours and religious books, icons, and gifts available for purchase.

Dinner will be served in the dining hall and features classic Middle Eastern cuisine — Chicken Middle Eastern style, Roz-be-Shairya or rice with vermicelli, Loubia-bi-Lahm or Mediterranean style green beans, salad, Arabic bread and pastries, coffee or milk — mmm mmm good!. Dinner prices are $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. Tickets will be available at the door.
