Construction under way on I-205 Airport Way Interchange Improvement Project

JILAYNE JORDAN
SPECIAL TO THE MID-COUNTY MEMO

In February, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Port of Portland began construction on the Interstate 205/Airport Way interchange project.

Currently, drivers trying to get on I-205 northbound from Airport Way can experience delays of up to 45 minutes during peak travel times.

With more than 10,000 people depending on Airport Way for daily commutes, deliveries, and getting to and from the airport, improvements are necessary to reduce traffic congestion and delays in the area. A major feature of the project is the construction of a new free flowing onramp from Airport Way westbound to I-205 northbound.

After the project is complete, eastbound drivers turning left onto I-205 northbound will also have two turn lanes and will no longer have to share the traffic signal with westbound drivers who are also heading for I-205 northbound. The project will also extend the existing Airport Way bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the new northbound onramp.

During construction, ODOT and the contractor will work to minimize impacts to traffic, and lane closures will not be allowed during the morning and afternoon commutes. Outside of peak travel times, motorists can expect daytime and nighttime single lane closures on Airport Way in both directions. In addition, bicyclists and pedestrians on the multi-use path will experience up to 20-minute delays while the contractor is drilling shafts next to the path from mid-March to mid-June.

Construction is expected to be complete by fall 2014.
