SCHOOL CORNER
Red Cross swimming lessons set
David Douglas swimming pool will be offering Red Cross summer swim lessons. Registration for all sessions begins Saturday, June 3 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the pool at Southeast 130th Avenue and Taylor Court. After June 3, swimmers can register Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Children must be four feet tall or have completed first grade. For information regarding dates, times and fees, call 503-261-8378.

K-8 fall soccer registration planned
It’s time to start thinking about playing for the David Douglas Soccer Club this fall.

For those of you playing in spring league, sign-ups will be Sunday, June 4 from noon to 3 p.m. at Mill Park, 1900 S.E. 117th Ave.

There will be additional registrations at Pizza Baron on Southeast 122nd Avenue and Division Street on Saturday, June 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; and on Wednesdays, June 14 and 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Registration is $65 per player. The registration fee after June 21 will be $75.

Choirs will sing for you
The Parkrose High School Annual Choral Awards Concert will be held on Tuesday, June 6 at 7 p.m. in the Parkrose High School Theater, 12003 N.E. Shaver St.

The Concert Choir, Treble Choir, A-Choir and Debonaires will perform.

Pre-school registration under way
Gethsemane Lutheran Preschool at 11560 S.E. Market St. is currently accepting registrations for the school year beginning in September. Parents of children who will turn three or four years old by Sept. 1 should call Karla Hills at 503-256-1835 for more information or to register.

School will be out, but the fun never ends
Parkrose SUN Community School, located at Parkrose High School, 12003 N.E. Shaver St., offers a variety of mini-camps and activities for youth, teens, and seniors this summer. Portland Parks & Recreation, Multnomah County, and the Parkrose School District sponsor these classes.

Parkrose SUN Community School will once again provide a free nutritious lunch every weekday from June 19-Sept. 1. Any youth under 18 is welcome to come for the food and stay for the fun.

Free lunches will also be available at Sacramento Elementary, 11400 N.E. Sacramento St.

There will be drop-in activities, such as games, arts and crafts, and special events for kids; open gym, dodgeball, table tennis, and Karaoke for teens; as well as supervised drop-in fun, Monday-Thursday from 12 to 3:30 p.m. at the high school.

For younger children (age 8 to 11) who spend unsupervised time at home, the American Red Cross’s When I’m In Charge course will be offered June 22 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Parents are encouraged to attend the last half hour of the class. The fee is $18.

The American Red Cross Babysitting Skills course, for ages 11 to 15, that covers responsibilities, accident prevention, emergency situations, positive supervision, first aid and babysitter rights, is being offered on Wednesday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class fee is $34.

Kids from 6 to 13 can stay active and explore skill development with Sports Mini-Camps including table tennis, volleyball, soccer, basketball, flag football, track and field, and tennis. Call for specific times, dates and ages. Camp fees range from $15 to $20.

Love to dance? Check out the Dance Mini-Camps. Styles include Latin salsa, urban breakdance, Brazilian samba, and hip-hop. Build self-confidence, express individuality, and work together on routines. Call for specific times, dates and ages. Fees will range from $15 to $25.

AARP Driver Safety classes for seniors run monthly. Learn practical tips, valuable information and changes in the law for only $10. Call for more info.

Seniors can also take advantage of the popular Senior Computer series. Call to find out more.

Activities for David Douglas youth held
Alice Ott SUN Community School will be offering summer activities for elementary and middle school students this summer. The classes will be held at Alice Ott Middle School, 12500 S.E. Ramona St., and will run for one week at a time, Monday-Thursday, from June 19 to Aug. 10. Elementary grade students will enjoy basketball, soccer, floor hockey, fencing, cooking, Tae Kwon Do, clay construction, survivor camp, an all day nature camp and more.

Middle school students can participate in golf, fencing, survivor camp, girls’ self defense, Red Cross Babysitting Skills, volleyball, computers, dodgeball, basketball and more.

Most activities are only $5. Portland Parks & Recreation, Multnomah County and the David Douglas School District sponsor these classes.

SENIOR RESOURCES
Public events scheduled by adult community
CherryWood Village Retirement Community, 1417 S.E. 107th Ave., has a couple of special events on tap for the public this month.

On Tuesdays, June 6 and 13, attend an OASIS Community Education class titled Medications, Herbs, and Supplements from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Sonia Huntley’s presentation will increase your understanding of prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, supplements and herbal therapies. You will learn about potential interactions, regulatory processes and manufacturing claims while becoming more informed about your health decisions.

On Sunday, June 25, join the Adventist Medical Center for the Adventist Heart & Lung Walk from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a fun, noncompetitive walking event with entertainment, snacks, booths, golf putting at CherryWood Village Retirement Community, and many prize drawings. Walk alone, or bring your friends and family to form a team for the walk.
